Magic!

I minute ago sitting here on a mooring my laptop said it was low in power, so I plugged it in. That got me thinking "magic":

- laptop itself is basically; magic
- I plugged it in to an AC circuit being powered from a 400W DC to AC inverter; magic
- that inverter is being powered from a solar panel; magic
- if it was night it would get power from a "box" that stores electrical power; magic
- electricity on a BOAT; magic
- my cell phone; magic
- it connect to the internet; magic
- it does it without wires even; magic
- later I will watch a movie: magic
- I will do with with the other magical items; bigger magic
- I will send that movie to my 40" TV, again without wires and it even says "magic is about to happen" as it connects; greater magic using lots of other magic
- I can go anywhere with the boat and know where I am within like 20'; magic
- some sails that weight maybe 200 pounds can move my 22,000 pound boat; magic
- diesel engine; magic
- refrigeration and freezer on a small boat; magic
- can turn seawater into fresh drinking water with a fancy filter; magic

Take a moment from normal internet forum troubles, complaints, bickering, trolling, being helpful, and pause and take in the wonder of

The MAGIC around us.

Re: Magic!

Nice post. Everything is about perspective. I was just having a conversation with a friend how I feel I need/would to reset my perspective. Humans have a great ability to adapt. This is both a blessing and a curse as it seems to feed the ambition we tend to have.

No to get me wife onboard with a reset...

Right now I am writing this sentence on a 5.4” x 2.6” device that contains the entire sum of human knowledge….magic.

Last night I drank a few magical elixers. Floating in those elixers were magically solidified pieces of water! The result was definately magical

Re: Magic!

I told my boss a coworker was taking over his role as a “boss” in our department making it difficult to work with him. Magic! He now has a different attitude and is a coworker again making it easier to work with him.

I like your post Sailorboy!

Windless = MAGIC! Press a button and it pulls up 250 feet of 3/8th chain and a 55lbs anchor!

Magic!

Amazingly similar to the description of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." With information sourced and edited very similar to the modern internet. Keep in mind, the origin came about around 1971.

Re: Magic!

Getting a little bored sitting around on the boat it appears.

It's not magic; it's technology which is why many refuse to sail out past internet / phone range without a satellite hookup......but would rather be "cruising" at a mooring or a marina.

And why there are probably fewer sailors these days.......

For plenty of people that are cruising while working and not retired, cruising beyond connectivity range isn't an option. No connectivity = no job = no money to keep cruising. For some people it's a want, for others it's a need. I'm in the second camp. If we've got connectivity, we can take longer times on the boat and work during the trip. If we don't, we're limited to short trips that we can take vacation from work for.

Cruising is more popular than ever. Maybe not your preferred style but all the data goes against your theory that there are fewer cruisers.

The Technology/Magic is a big part of what makes that possible. The rarified skill set that used to be required is no longer the entry hurdle that it once was.

Re: Magic!

Butane really is a magical substance.
It’s a heavy liquid, but a lighter fluid.

Exactly, we headed out in 2007 at age 37...never could have done it if we couldn't keep working.

Also, kind of funny, prior to somewhere around the 1950-1960's, there were a handful of rich yachtsmen and people who worked on boats. There was nothing remotely like the modern idea of cruising sailors. Just the idea of pleasure sailing was an odd idea.
