Lighting strike or electric gremlin?

What should my next move be? Arrived at the boat for a nice afternoon sail. Jeanneau 389 model year 2016. Started yanmar engine and warning signal was buzzing. All engine fluid levels were fine. Did notice some antifreeze under the engine which was not there before. Raymarine A series chart Plotter turned on. No auto pilot was connected. No AIS. Did have a GPS fix. P 70 pilot control turned on no data displayed. I 70 instrument display turned on no data displayed. AIS 650 class B transceiver working. AIS splitter 100 working. Refrigerator stopped working after one day. Shore power cord looks fine. Mast antenna looks fine. All connections seem to be fine to electronics. SCHEIBER Cabin electrical panel 12 V DC side LCD display not working. This display gives battery levels, water level and Diesel level. Opened up electrical panel and behind the LCD display one connector has some black burn marks. All domestic and impeller batteries are fine as are chargers. No fuses were tripped. Talked to Boat US about possible lightning strike. They offered no help. I know electronics go bad. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Lighting strike or electric gremlin?

Electronics do not all go bad at once, there was a common cause, almost for sure.

A lightning strike on or even just near your boat is the most likely cause of the long list of issues that all appear at once. Have you talked to your dock neighbors? If any nearby boats have similar issues lightning starts to get to be more of a sure thing instead of just iikely.

I wouldn't expect your insurance company to be very eager to help you prove it was lightning...

Re: Lighting strike or electric gremlin?

Dock mate did verify a lighting strike about a week ago. He lost his battery charger. That is all he discovered. He thinks it went through the shore power connections. Going to call insurance company today and start the process.

Re: Lighting strike or electric gremlin?

A close hit some years ago caused me similar problems. The instruments all came back to life, some in minutes, some in a week. The expensive inverter took several hours. Not sure about your coolant though.

Our current issues on the new to us boat are electrical. The autopilot alone had two shorts. The wiring is a train wreck. I don’t know yet whether each instrument still not working has its own wiring problem, or there is a common problem. Probably both.

One bad connection can cause all manner of malfunctions. Mr Multimeter and I are working on the fuel reading today.

Chase down one of the problems and it may solve several. Good luck.

Re: Lighting strike or electric gremlin?

Had a close strike (boat anchored nearby) in Dry Tortugas and had similar issues. We were on the boat and felt/saw nothing other than the other boat getting hit. All his electronics were fried, but we thought we escaped until we went to leave the next day. There were various electronics issues like on your boat. This was later confirmed as likely from the near strike and insurance provided new equipment (with a big deductible of course).

Re: Lighting strike or electric gremlin?

This is too many simultaneous failures of independent devices to be anything other than evidence of a nearby strike. Been there. Replacement of all components is your best solution- otherwise you’ll be chasing gremlins for years.
Insist on that with your insurance adjuster.
