Re: Laughs: You know Someones not a Sailor when...

I had a crew show up wearing cowboy boots and a cowboy hat, no other gear whatsoever. Surprised he did not bring his horse and lariat .I knew immediately he would not be of much help and certainly was no sailor.I spent some time cleaning black scuff marks off the deck and he spent much of his hanging onto that hat These shortcomings were overshadowed by a charming personality with a keen mind and we became good friends.

As they say: "any port in a storm".

I would never try to impress girls by telling them I'm a sailor.

for me no trousers etc would likely have been a deal breaker. But clearly a YMMV thing .

English Bay, Vancouver BC?

What river is that where sailing is prohibited? We often hear that about rivers here in the US but inevitably...it just ain't so. Sailing is prohibited in some canals here but I've yet to hear of a river where it actually was.

Re: Laughs: You know Someones not a Sailor when...

That gave me a good chuckle, OP. Hey, maybe he didn't sink because he's still perched on top of that rock! Tossing out the anchor and letting her fill to just below the floorboards will probably prevent the sinking. If he thought he was going 30 kts, he probably also thought that he had sailed back to a harbor afterwards too!
