Re: How long do you stay? How far do you go from your boat?

It varies on location, available time and many other factors. I do remember dropping the anchor in Port Bonbonon, South Negros Oriental in the Philippines, and 10 months later hiring a couple of local lads to chop the reef off the anchor chain before we could leave.

Re: How long do you stay? How far do you go from your boat?

Anchored in Cairns inlet once for 8 months while we worked on Ocean Spirit a 105ft sailing cat. The money we saved by not being in the marina paid for extra good anchoring gear, an outboard so we did not have to row, a BMW R100S (Used) so we could do road trips etc and 60% of our food was left overs from the amazing lunches they served. Our Siamese cat had fresh prawns every night. Banked more than $1000 each week and that was 30 years ago.
When we quit to sail round Australia the owner told us that we had the best job in the world......... I believe him now !! RIP Ross.

So, how long do you stay in one spot? Why so long? Why so unwilling to move the boat? And why would you rather go around the island in a RIB than the boat that you love?
How long? It depends. I rarely stay anywhere less than a few days. Multiple weeks is common. Sometimes longer. Last season we anchored in the same location for nearly two months.

I’m not sure it’s an issue of being unwilling to move. We’re cruisers. Generally we’ve got no where in particular to go, and lots of time to get here . If we find a spot that is safe, and beautiful, then what’s the rush? Stay and enjoy it.

We use our dinghy (a portabote) to explore, to get to shore, to connect with others in the anchorage, and sometimes for long runs into town. I also have a sail rig for the dinghy which I have set up when we’re anchored for long periods. And we also dig out the inflatable kayaks for more intimate water exploration.

Re: How long do you stay? How far do you go from your boat?

On our recently-completed circumnavigation, we spent a year in Thailand and a year in Trinidad. On the other hand, we only spent 3 weeks in Singapore.

It’s very important to cross the northern Indian Ocean during the northeast monsoon (if you’re heading west) and we had arrived in Thailand just after it began, forcing us to wait a year for the monsoon to form again.

When we were in the San Blas islands, we met a couple who had been anchored in the same place for 13 years. amazon.com delivered to their boat.

Why people come or go, stay or leave, will always be one of life’s mysteries. Could it be possible that they’re doing what they want?

Fair winds and calm seas.
