It wasn’t inadvertent.

I’m considering subscribing to:
Small Craft Advisor
And/or
practical Boat Owner.

But currently GOB is the only one getting money from me directly.

Not sure what the big deal is. Just an ad. They need to make a buck somehow.

The ads are most likely targeted, so there's every possibility that either you were searching for or looking at tyres on the Internet at some point or your phone eavesdropped on you talking about tyres.

Re: Has Cruising World lost touch?!

I gave up on CW several years ago but recently received an issue in the mail, I guess they sent it to entice me to buy a subscription again. It took me about 5 minutes to flip through and realize I’ve made the right decision to save my hard earned money.
I do subscribe to GOB, I pretty much read that from cover to cover.

Love my Good Old Boat Magazine...great read, and fairly timeless looking back at old articles.

I love Good Old Boat!

I have a friend who calls sailing magazines like Sail and Cruising World "boat porn". Have not read any of them in eons.

Re: Has Cruising World lost touch?!

It’s all about lifestyle aspersions. As a Sailing magazine, it’s has mostly become an outlet for catamaran sails and charters, it seems like it’s owned by that segment.

Having been in the business my guess is the publisher needed new tires and did a swap.

Absolutely not the case. We live aboard, cruise full time, and don’t own a car. I’ve certainly no reason to talk about tires.

I’m seeing the ads because Cruising World has targeted me as someone who would be interested in their publication. They obviously stopped there instead of applying the myriad of filters available to them.

By showing ads for tires to someone with my demographic profile they’ve accomplished two things:

1.) Driven me further from giving my attention to the publication.

2.) Provided horrible value to the tire company who is likely to see poor results from the campaign. With the ability to hyper target on FB there is no excuse for that.

Most people who own boats, own cars.

Most people who buy boats, want wheel steering.

Most boats are power, and the sailing ones are mostly used under power.

Jeep tires make excellent jury rig sea drogues.

etc.

Has Cruising World lost touch?!

I own a boat. It’s a sailboat. I fantasize I own a car. It owns me. 2004 Jeep Cherokee 159k miles. About 2k a year to keep going reliably. But I’d so much rather buy sails than a car.
Oh. Maybe my boat owns me too.
Yeah I totally get the confluence of Cruising World/Sail Magazine/ etc with disposable income. I go on and off with the subscription.
Here on the East Coast it the US I really like Soundings Magazine for down to earth articles power or sail. And for a freebie Points East is pretty darn good too.
But don’t forget. Subscriptions and advertisement revenue are what allows them to stay in business and bring us content we want to read. If I don’t like the ads I skip right over them.
