Hand vs Hydraulic swaging for lifelines

I moved my pulpit back a few inches, forcing me to resize my lifelines. While looking for options I found that the swageless stud won't match my fine threaded turnbuckles. Swage studs seem to be available in half crimp or mechanical swage.

While looking for a deal on the cheap bar swage, I found a variety of hydraulic swage tools that use dies, pump by hand, and claim around 8 - 10 tons.

Has anyone used these? Are they used with the hand crimp terminals or the ones designed for traditional swaging. I've seen videos of it being used to make wire railings, but they don't specify if the terminal was designed for machine or hand swaging.

Re: Hand vs Hydraulic swaging for lifelines

I bought the Johnson hand swage terminals in the right thread. Thought I could use the press at West Marine but I guess that doesn't work because it's designed for nicopress sleeves. Johnson makes it's own tool too be used for their hand swage fittings. Just putting this out there for anyone else with the same problem.

Yes. I had to buy the Johnson 53-210 swage tool. Worked fine.

Sold it after finishing. / Len

Re: Hand vs Hydraulic swaging for lifelines

You get maybe 70% of wire strength with hand crimp.
Better to do a nicropress around thimble and use lashing. Fraction of cost.
