Does constant anchoring wear you down?

Back to the original topic, I am much more rested as a rule living on the boat than I am living on land. Some of it may be that I mostly go to bed with the sun and am rarely sleep deprived as often happens with hectic land lives and the night life. After 8 years I can honestly say I get more run down living on land than at anchor.

We had a big squall come through here last night at about 8:30pm blowing 30 knots and a bit of rain. Bigger than the normal tropical squalls.
I think anyone at the bar would have high tailed it back to their boats even though they would get wet. So few are so complacent they stay drinking if the weather changes badly.

Although a good, expensive anchor is good to have. lots of us dont because we caqn afford it now. I have a Delta and am very happy with it, though if you pass the hat for a new generation pick I would accept it.

Give a good tug backwards when you think its set and then stay on board for a day and the first squall, then you are pretty fine to go relax and not worry about it

Another issue with stern anchor lines is dinghies running over them at night.In the 4 winters cruising Mexico never once did I use a stern anchor,but I do have one ready for use.Never dragged,easy exit if weather changes.Can't stand the thought of ropes being anywhere near rudder or prop.Although sometimes being beam to swell is a bit much,but thats cruising!

We have a Furuno GP-32.

Power draw is about 0.2 A. It is on 24 hours a day.

I would recommend it as low power draw, reliable, easily to operate. The facilty of being able to set an alarm from a remote waypoint is particularly useful.

Just as a generality and not applying to every soul in the universe, I think *generally* the longer/more one has sailed, the more one has respect for the things that can go wrong.

Doesn't mean you don't go out because you're afraid now, but it does mean that you do check your anchor setting and stay with the boat awhile before going ashore.

Agree with the other person's comments about sleeping. I sleep wonderfully in the marina but even better anchored (once I'm confident the anchor will hold).

In my view whilst I am not currently cruising it will relate to your confidence in and experiences with your particular gear selected for your cruising grounds.

I consider anchor gear amongst if not the most important item of safety equipment on a vessel. Not something to short change and skimp on.
Naturally if your are not confident with anchoring it will contribute to wearing you down.

It's not just your anchor selection, amount and choice of rode, but also and capacity of reliability of anchor winch, snubbers and backups all subjects of hotly contested threads here.

If anchoring is not an easy trouble free pleasurable experience for you its either concern for the adequacy and reliability of you system or not yet adequate experience anchoring and that's something that you need more time cruising to reach the point you are confident with it.

I think there was something wrong with your Garmin. Mine did much better than that.

Yes that's us. Hill inlet this year. Still our favourite anchorage, this year plenty of mudcrabs, queenfish and calamari.
