Books and Movies NOT to take on a Voyage

A recent thread about good ideas for what to take on a long voyage for entertainment prompted good positive comments about favorite books and movies. That thread is here:
Idea for longer trip crews - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

A mischievous thought came to mind while looking over the suggestions. And that led to this (purely humorous) post about what you would consider the books and movie titles one should NOT take on a voyage.

Yes, these are the books and movies that may scare landlubbers and crew and possibly give them some bad ideas.

This is intended to be a fun thread (for humor, or black humor) and entirely for entertainment.

_____________

Here are a few I would suggest NOT taking on voyage:

1. Mutiny on the Bounty (movie) (Yes, this is a classic, but posted here for fun.)

2. Dead Calm (movie)

3. Jaws (book and movie)

4. The Caine Mutiny

And I liked that movie. Introduces the existence of "White Squalls" (now recognized as "microbursts") as something a mariner should know about. Good "coming of age" story too.

Thanks for adding it to the list of "Not to Take" titles.

*Not to Take in this sense means just fitting this thread topic.

I have not heard of 'The Shallows' so thanks for adding that.

Ishtar is one I would rather forget. Forcing someone to watch it is likely to cause mutiny!

Good additions to the "Not To Take" list! Thanks for adding them.

"Open Water" is one I remember well, as a chilling story of what can happen to SCUBA divers.

Any movie by Peewee Herman or Adam Sandler and that ilk. Being cooped up on boat having to listen to this stuff would drive me insane.
Survival.at sea stories dont bother me, the point is the people survived!

Re: Books and Movies NOT to take on a Voyage

I actually *like* reading survival stories while sailing. This summer on our 3-month cruise I read:
  • Left for Dead: Surviving the Deadliest Storm in Modern Sailing History (Fastnet, Nick Ward)
  • Adrift: Seventy-Six Days Lost at Sea (Steven Callahan)
  • Unbroken (a World War II survival story, including a lot of time in a life raft)
  • The Finest Hours (watched the movie)

It was comforting to read stories like this while we were going through Johnstone Strait, because I knew no matter how bad it got, it paled in comparison to what the person in the book went through.

I'd have to say Steven Callahan's book was the best, really amazing the process he went through in figuring out how to survive on that life raft.

Johnstone Strait? A little choppy and uncomfortable perhaps - but hardly a place of survival stories.
