Actually, Duck was making waterproof, cloth-backed tape for the military first. It was only after the war that anyone thought to try it on ducting.

Everyone with a cruising boat should have a quasi-commercial submarine robot. Gives us great ability to get an under water view. Not cheap but nothing about yachting is.

Re: Best way to fasten a GoPro to a boathook?

After attaching my GoPro to my boat hook using a handle-bar adaptor, I made one of these set ups (GoPro Underwater Wi-Fi cable setup) so I could view video live from the GoPro while it is underwater. Works REALLY well. Live video is very handy rather than taking a video, pull the camera up and viewing it then put the camera back in the water.

Cruisers are supposed to be self-reliant.

There's nothing self-reliant about buying expensive toys.

Don't buy a submarine robot - build one!

And that a GoPro on a boat hook is an easy and safe way of doing that.

I can think of other scenarios where I might want to stick a camera underwater, but the question is how?

If I had a dedicated selfie-stick, great. But if I'm using what I have lying around, say a boat hook, how do I attach it?

Tape is the obvious answer, but what tape? Duck tape? Electrical tape? Masking tape?

What will hold up to being held under saltwater with a reasonable current?
Why mess around with duct tape when for $20 you can get the proper bar or rail mount where you got the GoPro from. You can also get a 'lead' - synthetic cord with a sticky patch as a back-up in case a mount fails. From the same source, you can also get a mount that offers a standard 1/4" tripod mount, so that you can use a Sony Action Cam. I have GoPro and Sony, and find the Sony better and easier to use (just in case you have not bought a GoPro yet).

I have 4 Gladius submersible drones in Honolulu. But I am in Indonesia long term at the moment. Nonetheless, shipping might be arranged if anyone wants to PM me.

Good old fashioned lashings work pretty well. Thats how we attached a GoPro to a boat hook to get these tarpon shots at night.

Fake News.

According to Johnson & Johnson:
https://www.jnj.com/our-heritage/ves...nted-duct-tape

Our Heritage
J&J Lightbulb Moment

Meet the Determined Woman Who Invented Duct Tape

The iconic product has been around for 75 years.

...The [War Production] board then asked the Industrial Tape Corporation (it later became Permacel)—then a Johnson & Johnson operating company—to make the product because of its demonstrated expertise in producing adhesive tapes. "

A worker at the J&J owned ITC designed the tape to replace a flimsy packing tape that was being used on cartons of war material at the time. Very interesting--

but not Duck. Duck is the tail end of a slightly newer operation:
http://duckbrand.com/about
"A Brief History of Duck
ShurTech Brands, traces its roots to 1950, when the Melvin A. Anderson Company was founded. Anderson, a tiny industrial tape distributor, set out to supply duct and electrical tapes to area factories."

Sounds like someone at ITC forgot to patent it, or Anderson made a knock off for a while. Duck says the brand and name were first used in the 1980's.

Don't you mean "run a-fowl"?

Duck tape, duct tape, gaffer tape are all essentially the same cloth mesh product with different adhesive formulas. The great thing about gaff tape is the adhesive is designed to stick to itself so you can tape down cables and when you pull it up again it will not leave any adhesive behind.

I wouldn't trust any clamp without a backup lanyard. My knock off SJCam went for a swim when the clamp on my dodger worked itself loose enough. luckily the camera in the waterproof housing floats for a bit and I was able to rescue it.
