Marcia now closer to Mackay than expected. If you look at radar it blowing at up to 167kph at Creal Reef weather station NE of Mackay.

Gone from cat 1 now saying cat 4 when it crosses the coast

Am concerned as it is close to Mackay and forcast to cross as Cat 5.

Could easily hit Mackay although WB still suggest heading south.

Prediction now is for 270 kmh that's um... 145 knots in the gusts. It went from cat1 to cat5 in about 8 hours!

We've sailed through there. Not densely populated which is its beauty but still plenty of people, scary stuff, I hope they're ok.

Oz cyclone chasers are a great way to track on fb. They have a good video posted on why it will head south now etc. I think Mackay will be missed but you never know. I am in Gladstone so not too safe either, more worried about the storm surge. My boat is on the pile moorings in Auckland creek and just got a text alert saying 80cm storm surge above high tide. This is a photo of today's high tide and tomorrow's is slightly higher! Should be ok hopefully.

A couple of points worth considering.

Cyclones that parallel a coastline with the dangerous quadrant moving ahead of the center are generally the most destructive due to the surge.

But, there may be a moderating effect if the cyclone is consistently over land, as it appears it may be.

Anyone have any idea what danger this system poses to the Brisbane area, especially where flooding is a distinct possibility?
