Boatr's cool but nothing without her, don't think it's obvious to many just what a special kind of person you need to be to achieve something like that. Incredible tenacity to get all the finance in, get the boat ready, high end tech skills, nowadays you need very good social media skills as well as so much is live streamed. Istr Ellen MacArthur lived on a portacabin floor for a long time when she started out. Not just check out of the 5 str hotel & turn up on a boat that's ready. Plus you need to be made of kryptonite!!!! Far, far beyond us mere mortals

Cole Brauer mentioned that her normal home was her van, and that being on the boat compared to that was like living in a Condo!

High Tech skills are definitely needed offshore with all the electronics onboard these boats.

That's why it was good that she was there when they prepped the boat for the race.

Electronics, computers, connections fail all the time with systems that are not being bounced around or in a salty environment so you know there were failures she had to deal with one being mechanical when her autopilot failed.

On top of that, it sure helps to have the energy, endurance, etc., of a 29 year old.

One other thing about age, the younger folks seem to be just naturally gifted when it comes to computer systems etc.

For example, she was born I believe in 1995 and we already had GUI for computer users then. She may have had a cell phone in grade school if you can image that.

To me, it's a little ingenuous to claim she's the first.... But it is still a most respectable accomplishment.

Cole did it non-stop and unassisted. None of the others you listed can claim that. The list of sailors that have sailed solo, non-stop, unassisted, is very short.

Cole was racing solo non stop, that was the claim.
Jeanne Socrates also did it non stop & unassisted, istr she anchored somewhere for a night to fix something but got no help & didn't leave the boat which was permitted under the rules.
77th birthday during the passage, another huge piece of kryptonite far beyond us little people.

Jeanne is an amazing sailor. I was aware of multiple solo circumnavigations, but I guess I didn't know that one of them was non-stop. She is not American however, and Cole is the first American woman.

Splitting hairs though. Of the many thousands of people who have circumnavigated, fewer than 200 have done it solo, non-stop. Being or not being the first of some group doesn't really change how amazing the accomplishment is. It is a very elite group.

Wow!

That's very impressive what she did at such a late age.

Re: American Women sails Round the World Solo!

Today's boats though are just a different breed.

I remember back in the 1990's going with a guy to sail his Cape Dory 30 across Pensacola Bay.

I was racing a Nacra 6.0 at the time and when it was hit by a wind gust the windward hull would lift out of the water a bit and at about the same time the boat would shoot forward.

I noticed that day on the Cape Dory when I was steering that when it was hit by a gust it would roll over a bit and move forward slightly faster but not by much.

It appears the boats like Cole Brauer was sailing have that ability to move on out quickly when the wind comes up.

A 40' boat with a similar waterline and displacing about 4,000kg is going to move if designed right, and the boats those folks race these days are really something.

Even when heeled on it's ear it still moves really well. The boat is so wide the keel stays entirely in the water even when heeled excessively.

On top of all that, they have finally come back to tiller steering on these larger boats which is great.

Also, she got second among racers with tons of experience with some sailing very similar boats.

Distance racing though is a different thing and when the competitors get separated small changes in the weather can have a huge affect as can their equipment. (and a bit of luck)

Very nice post race interview.

Ann, the only claim i have seen is that she is the first AMERICAN woman to circumnavigate NON STOP solo. Of the examples you gave i think only Jessica Watson and maybe Jeanne Socrates have done it non stop. All very impressive though.

Re: American Women sails Round the World Solo!

Just noticed one guy in the race (Global Solo Challenge), 64 year old Dafydd Hughes, was sailing an old 1971 S&S 34 he found in a barn.

Looks like the slower boats leave first and faster boats are held back for a few days or weeks to even things out a bit.

Tell us about your boat or the boat you would like to have.
I’ve found an S&S 34 that is completely stripped out and has been sitting in a dry barn in West Wales for the last 13 years.
