Where haul-out in Florida for hurricane season

Hi folks,

The mrs and I are in the SE Caribbean at the moment and we want to visit the USA from june to december. Plan is to put the boat on the hard, do a lot of work on the boat and, when finished, travel around for a few months by car or RV.

My question is: do I need to go to Chesapeake/Potomac to find a decent hurricane proof storage for our boat? Or is there a safe possibility in Florida?

If you could give me some names of yards around Miami who store safely, permit doing your own work and have reasonable rates I'd be grateful.

Robbies, 3D, or Spencer's all allow self work... As far as hurricanes, and long term storage I'd look at Indiantown Marina in the middle of the state

There is not to many do it yourself yards left down here. Probably the best place to do work and store the boat is Indiantown. Indiantown Marina There is also Playboy in ft. lauderdale a diys yard but not for storage Playboy Marine Center - South Florida's Premier Do-It-Yourself Boatyard - Vessel Haulout andhttp://crackerboyboatworks.com/ Cracker Boy Marine But Indiantown has the best storage and is the furthest inland

It has been a while since we used Cracker Boy, but we found it to be an excellent choice for a do-it-yourself yard in south Florida. Chuck

Your biggest problem is finding a boatyard with space available during hurricane season. One the popular and probably the safest, history-wise, are the facilities around Green Cove Springs, Florida. That is an area of the St John's River just west and southwest of Jacksonville, Fl. which is at the northern end of Florida. The area is almost 25 miles inland and so quite a distance from the coastline and hurricane surge damage.

BTW, I-Town is on the okeechobee waterway and is behind locks, it's at least 40 miles inland, and the staff is very diligent with hurricane ties... Each boat has at least 6 straps down to screw moorings in the ground.

there is a bridge clearance problem with Indiantown , I think from memory that i 43 or 47 feet I used to careen under years ago Ole

CrackerBoy in Ft. Pierce has the advantage of being within easy walking distance of a grocery store and a west marine, no need for a car like a lot of the others mentioned.
