Recommendations for Berthing in Amsterdam?

For a change we are going to go the inside way through North Holland, down the Ijsselmeer, and to Amsterdam.

Where is the best place to berth? Is it possible to tie up in one of the canals someplace? I see Sixhaven is very much in the center of town, but looks sterile and un-atmospheric.
