Ditto for me on both counts but I already have a boat and a wife. However I see this FB thing going on, all around me in the Rio. It seems to be what everybody is doing and if you don't join in you would miss a lot of stuff going on. You could find a boat without FB but getting on a boat without it would be harder.

I'm working on getting a boat, a wife will have to wait.

You are probably right about FB, I've never been too into social media, but they aren't gonna go away and would likely be a big help in some situations.

Re: Planning for Caribbean

An alternative to the Canary Islands for trying to find crew opportunities is Gibraltar. The majority of boats that arrive in the Canaries stop here first. I personally know two boats who picked up crew here before heading out. One stayed with the boat all the way to the Caribbean and the other only stayed with them as far as the Canaries.

We have been to Gibraltar a number of times over the past four years and each time we have met people asking if we knew anyone interested in taking on crew. I don't know if they all found a boat, but I know some of them did.

In Gibraltar (or La Linea,Spain right across the border) your English will be a plus. The willingness to pitch in and do boat chores will also be a big plus. If you can cook, that may seal the deal.

Best of luck!
