Yeah! Now women can have babies without a husband or even having sex.

But now they have to work to support them and have to hire care takers while they work. So they are mostly poor and uneducated as above. It's a vicious circle.

Re: More Bad News for Caribbean Coral Reefs

Hey Tar,
let me get this straight.

It's hypocritical for a conservationist to own a boat?
And the "Greenies" are gonna come and take it away from me?

Bahhahahaha!

Are we sure our calculations for orbital drift, sun wobble and negative entropy of hydrogen fusion of the sun's reactor fit neatly into our "hypothetical" timeline? I'm not sure the metaphor of a train schedule is relevant. Do we really want to draw the 4.6 billion year geological timeline relative to 1000 years or in the case of the IPCC 50 years? Even out of Africa looks mighty skinny. Tell me Canada is not invested in tar sands. One might say there's too much exportin' goin' on. Maybe a new focus of protest for you. If we mine here and they burn it there do we still qualify for a carbon credit? I don't think so

The Milankovitch cycles a an possible explanation. Even the Stanford Solar Centre dismisses the sun. The Vostok ice cores go back much more than human history and show that we have never have CO2 levels matching those at present.

I have not mentioned trains.

The BEST study back goes 250 years.

BTW - I am not happy about Canada's current government and the environment.

Who granted you an exemption for your carbon footprint? Your boat is just like the clorox bottle I pick up on the beach, only bigger. By the way, the market affords you the opportunity to dispose of it neatly, without guilt and further responsibility. How convenient.

Re: More Bad News for Caribbean Coral Reefs

The bottom line:

Our playground, the ocean (3/4 of the earth's surface) is being spoiled. Some I can see - 1000 miles from shore looking at plastic floating in the Pacific gyre; some I can perceive - bleached out coral in the Caribbean; some I cannot see, but it is there - ocean acidification.

Even my dog knows not to befoul it's own home.

I like to be inclusive so I decided to add what you omitted, the medieval warm period.

Re: More Bad News for Caribbean Coral Reefs

"we should be in a cooling cycle"
From what I've heard, we ARE in a cooling cycle. Which is where CO2 and global warming comes into play. Apparently our industrial release of CO2 has actually SAVED us from a mini ice age. And if we rush into reducing emissions and stopping gloabl warming in favor of what the planet is busy trying to do "normally"...we might find an equally bad problem as crops fail and temperatures fall.
Somewhere around 1350 AD there was a year called "the year without summer" when the British Isles and Scandanavia had extreme problems, now thought to be caused by ONE massive volcanic eruption on the other side of the world. That's all it takes to totally change the score: One super-eruption. And that's actually within the norms.

Less volcanic activity, more solar activity, and likely localized.

Unfortunately, we here in the West don't have a lot of control over what gets dumped in the oceans of the East. Or, tsunami's that recently polluted the North Pacific with tons of trash and chemicals.

It's a hard fight and all we can do is bitch until they get tired of hearing it, then we'll see what happens. We can't put sanctions on them, they own most of the industry now. We buy tons more then we sell to them.

So does anyone have any suggestions on how to control or stop the ongoing pollution. I surely don't see any coming out of our rivers or dumps.

And what is not within the norms is CO2 approaching 400 ppm. That is a trend, not a discontinuity as would be a major volcanic eruption.

I was through the gyre twice before the tsunami. The first time was worse than the second. The third was just more big stuff.

Ocean acidification is coming from Canada, the US, China, India everywhere. We can control what we dump and set an example.

The CO2 is invisible. That is why you do not see it.

You make own consumer decisions.

Perhaps, though ice core proxies reveal a more global medieval warming.

I'm going to slip out my oilers and into my bunk for the night. I'll leave it that skepticism is a healthy thing and we'll have to wait a little longer for the truth to reveal itself. In the meantime, I'll not leave it to the Al GorZeera's of the world without debate. Funny how principal on Gorzeera's part is so malleable.
And the acolytes were so certain of his truth.
