Good Anchorage in Savannah, GA?

Anybody know of a good anchorage in Savannah, GA and associated shore access to explore the town? Anchorages where it's easy to catch a bus into town would be acceptable, too. I'm wondering if anyone out there has found someplace that works well and that isn't on ActiveCaptain?

Savannah is well up the river from any good anchorages. Your best bet is to go up there and tie up right on the waterfront where everything is within walking distance. There are a couple of docking options, including the city docks. There are also plenty of marinas at Thunderbolt, which is within a reasonable taxi distance.

Go into Thunderbolt and take the bus into Savannah. Much cheaper and easier than docking in Savannah which is more oriented to big boat commercial traffic. Savannah is a great place to visit on foot.

There's no anchorage I know of right near the city. We've docked at the River St. Docks on the Savannah River which gave us an amazing feel for the city (at least when the tide was high enough to let us see it!); however, the wakes were very annoying. And it's not the wakes from big huge ships, it's those little ferries from the Westin across the river...all day and all night. Also, be sure to secure everything for the night...I know it's anecdotal, but someone tried to steal the tender off the boat behind us. Happy cruising!

Thanks for the advice on docks, but they are, for the most part, outside of our budget. I know that anchoring in Turner's Creek (behind Wilmington Island) you can pay $10 to Hogan's Marina for dinghy access and ride a bus into town. Just wondering if anyone knows about an option that's more convenient in the budget realm.

Turner's creek is nice and fairly quite to drop hook. We have been in and thru there a few times. Check active captain for the sites around here. Most places around here on the water are high to dock up or to drop the dink. You can also check Sail harbor also right there on Turner's creek to see if you can drop dink and catch a cab to downtown.

I usually anchor up the Herb River, but as far as I know there is no dinghy access up there. You could probably dinghy from there to one of the Thunderbolt marinas. Savannah is a great place to visit, but I don't think it is worth it to struggle through the hassle of getting there from one of the possible anchorages.

We anchor up the Herb River and dink up to Thunderbolt. If you ask nicely, several marinas will let you tie up to their docks as long as you aren't in the way. You can catch a bus from there and head to town. Our first time there we bought a ticket at the tour bus terminal and traveled all over the city.

We stayed at the city market dock, and it was expensive, but there's an amazing amount of ship traffic going by to watch. It looked to me like you might be able to drop the hook in Back River, but it would take some local knowledge.
