Thumbs up Karpaz Gate Marina

We arrived back from our three month tour of the Turkish coast to KGM. What a very nice feeling to be back here.

The beach Club is up and running. So a group of us went along to the Happy Hour for a few drinks-very nice ( apart from them trying to get us to leave early.) It was supposed to be open untill 7pm 1900hrs but they turned off the lights and music to try to get us to go at 1745hrs.

Also there is at last an ATM!! and an active Yacht Broker.

Security is now very good and access is only by a card to the pontoons, toilets etc.

Welcome back Peter I trust your Turkish cruise was everything you both had hoped for. It's nice to know that you get a very nice feeling about Karpaz Gate even when you return from cruising to so many beautiful places in Turkish waters. Especially Maramis Yacht Marina which looked quite special when I Googled it.
Shame Happy Hour was turned into Happy Half Hour but I suppose you could always adjourn to a welcoming cockpit in the marina.
Good to hear about the ATM ( I wonder if it will accept my credit card) and the Yacht Broker as well as the improved security. All good improvements to enhance living aboard in KGM. Can't wait!!!
Speaking of Brokers did you have any joy with the UK or Oz guys?

Did you happen to notice any really, really pretty catamarans sitting in the marina looking a little lonely ? lol
Enjoy your stay but I guess it's going to get a little colder shortly.
Do you have need of a heater onboard during winter or do you just tough it out? Just curious!
Kindest regards
Wayne

Yes, we are pleased to be back here!

Cheaper diesel at 2.92TL/litre (4.34TL in Finike) and MOH is finding the food prices much lower too - especially compared to Marmaris.

We have Webasco heaters on board which worked well for the few weeks we needed heating over winter.

More catamarans berthed here so no one is feeling lonely!

Nice to be meeting up with old friends and making new ones..

Hi beneteau I take it that you are not back there and maybe won't be going back from the sounds of it??
Wherever you are I hope you are well and enjoying your cruising.
Kind regards

Read you loud and clear, I will bear that in mind for the future.
Hopefully your experience in the new marina next year will be a whole lot better.
Depends on the timing but I may catch up with you in April/ May if i make it by then.
Kind regards

Hi Peter & Claire,

Glad you made it back safe and sound. Good to hear that there is an ATM and the beach club is up and running (albeit happy hour is not quite programmed correctly).

How is the rework (paint / gel coat) going on Shania. From what I'm picking up, KGM appear to be failing to achieve their own claimed and advertised technical capabilities, skills, experience and expertise in respect to works etc associated with yachts and boats in general.

It should prove interesting to hear their response to the information that you have obtained in respect to spraying Gelcoat. Although it goes without saying that you would not expect to have to do the research yourself after it's all gone wrong and still be footing the bill.

Peter
Would be keen to hear more about the Gelcoat / technical expertise issues and your experience as I am looking at having to do some minor gelcoat repairs amongst other jobs in KGM in the near future?

Hi Wayne,

This is an on going problem. I paid good money to have a proffesional job done and to be quite frank about it-Its a disaster. It is soft and sticky and attracts dirt, say no more.

I went to paint specialist who were applying gelcoat and was told after they inspected our yacht that it was applied incorrectly. Lots more discussions but too long for this site.

I shall be approaching the management team to see what can be done to rectify the situation.

Hi Peter
Thanks for the information. I guess I will be looking elsewhere to have my gelcoat repairs done as I do not wish to suffer the same fate as unfortunately you have. I was also in need of installing some solar panels but am now concerned about the possible lack of expertise in this area as well. Marine electronics as you know can be very demanding technically to get it perfect. Anything less than perfect is only inviting problems.
I hope you are able to arrive at an equitable solution with the management team with regards to your problem.
Good luck and you might keep us all informed of the outcome so that we take this into consideration when making our own decisions in the future re work and services.
Kindest regards
Wayne

Question Re: Karpaz Gate Marina-up date

Hi all, we had our meeting and it was an amicable one.

The out come is that the gelcoat that was used was from a bad batch?? and so some new gelcoat is to be ordered and they will test it first if WE are happy then they will re-do all that is required to be done. seems OK to us at the moment. Will keep you all up-dated.

what a load of cods wallop i would like to use other words but i wont , I wonder how they knew it was from a bad batch did the supplier send out a recall notice ( if so you should ask to see it ) to every one and when did the best technicians in eastern med realize it was from a bad batch , why was it that so many yachts from last yr in karpaz went elsewhere to have repairs done or haul out . i would be going elsewhere and send them the bill for it as they have admitted liability

I agree, but I would get the money back FIRST, before going elsewhere...

Peter,

Glad that you and Claire are back and hope that you had a good time in Turkey. You and Claire are very special people and we enjoyed meeting you and our time together...too bad there was not more time, but on we go with our circumnavigation.

I read the other comments in this thread and I have to say that there are some people that are either uninformed, misinformed, inexperienced, have an agenda, or simply have a chip on their shoulder. I noted that two of the commenters were two of the worse marina rule violators at Karpaz while Judy and I were there. One of them covered his berth neighbors with sanding dust while he noisily refinished the inside of his boat and the other tested the limits of every marina rule, including painting his hull while berthed...fortunately he did not spill any paint which could have ruined his neighbors boat.

I was recently asked by Jimmy Cornell which was the best marina we had experienced during our circumnavigation. I said, Karpaz Gate Marina. I meant it then and will continue to say it.

Hi to Claire
