Re: I bought a 300Ahr Chinese lithium battery on Amazon

He is right, if it has a c rating means it will put out 300 amps for an hour
Thats not the grade of the cells

Re: I bought a 300Ahr Chinese lithium battery on Amazon

hmm, overall battery banks are rated in KWH
not voltage and not ah
who cares about a 200 ah battery unless you want to save space
Two 100 ah batteries equal one 200ah battery and the same price

Good to hear. Have been thinking about LFP for next battery change but so the Trojans are holding up.

Thanks for the views! I'm probably the same guinea pig in this. Having read various forums and opinions to also decide to take a Chinese battery, save so to speak, and use this I could not understand what is wrong with my motor trader boat... That's right! It is also necessary to choose good forums and listen to experts and not be guided only by the price (

Re: I bought a 300Ahr Chinese lithium battery on Amazon

I have no issue with a properly installed LifePo battery, I've just never seen one on a boat.

Be very careful buying any chemistry of lithium batteries online.

I surveyed another boat yesterday and condemned not only the installation of the batteries but the batteries themselves. I've attached only the first page of my condemnation regarding the batteries themselves ( there are two more pages condeming the installation).

I see this every day. Do you think this guy is getting insurance with this survey report ?

Re: I bought a 300Ahr Chinese lithium battery on Amazon

old conversation here but I wanted to add the Lithium VS Lithium Po4 type chemistry which is not subject to fire danger as the case with the laptop and hoverboard explosions. Its much safer now as long as you stay LiPo4 chemistry. But you still need circuit breakers and BMS to protect from runaway charge or discharge damage.

Iíve not met a surveyor that understands the first thing about lithium chemistry or batteries. this arena is properly in the domain of appropriate electronics engineers with relevant domain experience.

The whole subject is way too specialised for general boat surveyors many of whom have little understanding of electronics anyway. This coupled with the lack of appropriate standards means that unless you ( ie surveyors in general ) understand the first principles you canít really ď evaluate ď these installs.

Thatís not to say you might be the exception but surveyors are ď generalists ď by nature. Sure anyone can survey bad wiring practice etc, but to evaluate lithiumís requires detail first principle knowledge in the absence of standards and also a body of custom and practice installs, which isnít there on boats at present.

Letís cut through the BS.

Firstly LFP technology is arguably safer then many LA installs. Itís very robust , capable of withstanding considerable abuse and poor charging strategies.

There are three things that need attention in any LFP install

HVC , LVC and over current protection.

LVC and HVC is easily implemented ( if not optimum) by a programmed voltage battery disconnect.

Over current can be handled by simple and appropriate fusing ( most batteries are fused on modern boats anyway. )

Thatís it as far as LFP is concerned. Clearly your charge source must be compatible with the simpler lithium charging profile. ( with appropriate temperature interlocks )

Of course you can have much more complex systems but again what I have outlined is the minimum safety solution

You do not need cell balancing , this is merely a ď nice to have ď but has no safety ramifications or advantages. On fractional C charging and discharging systems , typical of boats , LFP cells actually converge not diverge and in fact once initially balanced tend to remain so.

So much of the marine lithium industry seems to want to prevent lithium as complex and hence expensive, ABYC is abetting this by its proposed ď over the topĒ new advisory standard.

So in fact your average LFP install isnít much more complex then a good LA install its just different.

Note that short circuits on big LA installs are quite spectacular too , I know !!!

Did we ever find out if the Chin 300AH battery is any good?

Re: I bought a 300Ahr Chinese lithium battery on Amazon

I suggest you check Will Prowse who does exhaustive surveys of all things solar/lithium and is a self-taught electrical engineer and all around brilliant and helpful human being. He makes a great living teaching and selling links to manufacturers lines on YouTube from his home in Vegas. And yes Chin's are great and there are tons of great choices to be found at increasingly reasonable cost. Even less than Chins. You just need to design the right system for your applications. Have a look at YouTube/Will Prowse on the subject and you will see.
Others are also building up very large lithium batteries from individual cells and there is information about this option through other tutorials.

Iíve had a house bank of 3 of them in parallel for a year now while cruising the east coast. They have performed extremely well for me so far. I did upgrade to an externally regulated alternator to better control charging, and alternator and belt life.

Re: I bought a 300Ahr Chinese lithium battery on Amazon

I need to modify my response above. I have three of the 100 Ah batteries in parallel. Using the 300 Ah battery instead would have been a poor choice in my use case. The maximum 100 A continuous and 300 A peak is the same for the 100 Ah battery and the 300 Ah battery. The three 100 Ah batteries in parallel give me 300 A continuous and 900 A peak, which I need for my bow thruster and inverter. The single 300 Ah Chins battery would not have worked.

What HVC would you suggest? I was looking for a programmable one and couldn't fine one.

Re: I bought a 300Ahr Chinese lithium battery on Amazon

Boatpoker,

It took me about 3 minutes online to determine that "Battery1" batteries are AGMs, and that the company has apparently disappeared, as a number of people were looking for them because their battery needed to be replaced. It appears they have a rather unusual form factor.

That doesn't mean that your condemnation of the installation isn't correct, but those batteries are not mysterious.

Iíve been around the architectural community for 40 years. Iíve been boating since 1958. Iím a MotŲrhead with old bikes and cars.
Consequently Iíve experienced just about every CSA UL ULC SAE CE ETL fraud itís astounding. Dangerous plastics porous metals absolute continuum of lies.
If it says made in China I ignore it so it doesnít change my perceived value of an item. If itís in a good old brand name like champion spark plug it ainít made in Detroit no more so keep it.
