Cape York round the tip and into Weipa sail trip June 22

Hi all

We are about to embark upon a trip out of Cairns heading up to the tip of Cape York, then down to Weipa in our Perry 43 cat.

We have a pretty good itinerary planned and two weeks to do the trip.

On the East Coast we will be stopping at Lizard Island, Flinders island Group, Lockhart River and then not really sure North of there as yet given a number of good potential locations.

keen to hear if anyone has any 'must see' stops along the way or any specific recommendations for anchorages anywhere from Cairns round the top to Weipa.

Expecting some good fast sailing days given the SE trades have well and truly kicked in.

Thanks and looking forward to responses.

Portland Roads is nice, but you need half tide or more to go ashore. Forbes island just north of there is supposed to be nice but we ran out of time. Might go next year.

The Torres Strait Island's are probably the highlight of the trip and well worth a few days. Outer reef if it's calm for a few days for some great diving and fishing. Also some nice little coral cays above Portland roads, just watch out for croc's, even offshore.
I dived the RMS Quetta wreck just off the tip of cape york if diving is your thing. Otherwise it's an nice cruise just not much shore based stuff to see on the east coast and less on the west coast down to Weipa. There are a couple of WW2 plane wrecks on the west coast (landbased) if that interests you.

You might like to check out Free Range Sailing on YouTube who did that trip and documented it well.

Just curious, Why are you heading to the top end and Weipa this time of year. We are only four weeks away from the beginning of Cyclone Season. With the current weather system I would not be surprised to see an early cyclone this season. Given this have you a cyclone plan in mind. Have you advised your insurance company of your plans or read your policy re cruising in that area in Cyclone season
