Re: Shipwreck discoveries

215-foot-long cruise ship sinks off Delaware coast
After 15 years of sailing through the Chesapeake Bay, the 215-foot, retired ‘American Glory’ cruise ship, was sunk, about 16 miles off the coast of Delaware’s Indian River Inlet, becoming he latest addition to the ‘Redbird Inshore’ artificial reef.
The 215-foot-long ship is the largest ship of the Redbird site, which also includes nearly 1,000 New York City subway cars, tugboats, barges, and armored military vehicles.

Because the sandy underwater landscape, off the Delaware coast, is fairly barren, there’s not much to draw fish. Adding a few hundred subway cars, and a cruise ship, goes a long way to making it more attractive, for both marine visitors, and humans, looking to see or catch them.

Re: Shipwreck discoveries

A ship that sank on Lake Huron 128 years ago is found nearly intact off Ontario's Bruce Peninsula

An American cargo steamer, The “Africa”, had been missing since October 1895, until two documentarians found it, at the bottom [285 Ft deep] of Lake Huron, while looking for invasive mussels.

The “Africa” vanished, in 1895, on its way from Ashtabula, Ohio, to Owen Sound, Ont. The ship set off on Oct. 4, 1895, with the barge “Severn” in tow. Both vessels were loaded with coal, and bound for Georgian Bay, until a snowstorm snapped the towline, separating both vessels.
The “Severn” hit shallow ground, and broke, on the western shoals of the Bruce Peninsula, while the “Africa” was lost, with all 11 members of the crew on board.

The wreck was discovered, in June, by Yvonne Drebert and Zachary Melnick, while filming the upcoming TVO documentary ‘All Too Clear’ — a film about the incalculable ecological damage, wrought by invasive fresh water mussels, after their release into the Great Lakes, more than three decades ago.

Re: Shipwreck discoveries

"New evidence" proves shipwreck is Captain Cook's “Endeavour”

The Australian National Maritime Museum released new details [1], to support their 2022 claim, that a shipwreck, in Rhode Island's Newport Harbor, is that of the “Endeavour”, the ship sailed by James Cook, on his historic voyage around the world, in the 1700s, before being renamed the “Lord Sandwich”.

The initial claim [2], announced in Feb. 2022, said that evidence including structural details and the shape of the wreck led them to believe the shipwreck was that of the Lord Sandwich, which was deliberately sunk by British forces in 1778, during the Revolutionary War. At the time, there was some doubt about the identification, according to a news release from the Australian National Maritime Museum.[1]

That "new evidence" includes the discovery of the shipwreck's pump well, and the discovery of a specific joint [keel-stem scarph], in the bow section of the wreck.
The archaeologists were able to look at archival plans, from when the ship was built, and confirm that the pump well's location on those plans was "aligned perfectly" with where it was drawn on the plans.

A final archaeological report, on the wreck's identification, will be released in 2024, the museum said.

A trove of objects, made of obsidian core, a type of volcanic rock used to make tools, with sharp-edged flakes for cutting, during the Neolithic era [±7,000 → 2,000 B.C.E.], has been discovered, off the coast of Italy [near the Island of Capri], dating back more than 5,000 years ago.
The items were found near Blue Grotto, a famous sea cave, once used as a private bathing location, for the Roman emperor, Tiberius.

The Wrecks of HMS “Erebus” and HMS “Terror”

In 1845, the HMS “Erebus” and HMS “Terror” set sail, from England, on a mission to chart a passage around the top of North America. Led by Captain Sir John Franklin, the voyage ended in tragedy, three years later, when both ships were lost, in the frigid waters off Canada's Arctic coast.
None of the 129 men on board the ships survived. The Franklin Expedition marked the worst disaster, in the history of British polar exploration, according to the Royal Museums Greenwich in London.

What happened to HMS Erebus and Terror?
Sir John Franklin's last expedition to search for the Northwest Passage ended in tragedy. How can we piece together the crew's final moments from the objects left behind?

Re: Shipwreck discoveries

The ferry, SS “Säntis”, was sunk, to the bottom of Lake Constance, on the Swiss-German border, in 1933, when it was deemed unfit to sail, and too expensive to scrap.

But, at a depth of almost 690ft (210m), the darkness, and lack of oxygen, have left the 157ft (48m) steamship remarkably well preserved.

Plans have now been approved, to raise the ship from the lake bed, and put it on public display.

The “Säntis” operated for 40 years, and carried up to 400 passengers, at a time.
But, after an ill-advised decision, to switch its engines from coal to oil, and an economic downturn in the area, the choice was made to scuttle the ship.

That I support. I hope that the wind farms sprouting up across NW Europe inshore waters will have a similar effect by limiting the ability of large trawlers to drag huge expanses of seabed which often take years to recover. In addition, if the small 30m tall oil rigs used in Brunei are anything to go by, even single tube structures attract many fish species after just a few years.
