Re: Mayday call via Satphone - Which MRCC to call?

If you’re in the Indian Ocean, contact the Australian SAR if you can. Their region covers a large part of the Indian Ocean anyway.
They are the only country that has long range airborne assets (Orions & Poseidons) & the inclination to do a full long range & extremely expensive rescue mission.
Ask Tony Bullimore! I spoke to someone who was on his rescue mission. They beat the crap out of the navy boat to save him.

When you dial an emergency call code you will be connected directly to fully trained emergency operators. They will be ready to offer advice and instructions to help resolve your emergency. If required, they will dispatch the nearest search and rescue team to your location.

505 calls are routed directly to the MRCC most appropriate to your location
So I'd suggest to simply dial 505 when in distress as they will route your call wherever help is closest.

Note “ 505” is an Inmarsat fleet broadband service it’s not available on their other services nor is it applicable to iridium

505 is only Inmarsat fleet broadband , it’s not available on other Inmarsat services or iridium

Oh I get it. I once insulted 3 Canadians at one time, with a dumb joke. About Hockey.

How did they contact you, via your SatPhone or HF? And why?

Re: Mayday call via Satphone - Which MRCC to call?

Thanks for all the replies!

I received the answer from MRCC Bremen, and they gave me the following answer:

Quote:
Dear Mr. X,

both approaches are possible. In the event of an alarm, the MRCC Bremen would pass on all information to the responsible MRCC.

We wish you a good trip - without the need to make use of either method!

Best Regards

Press and public relations
So, from my point of view, i guess i would feel very comfortable to talk to someone speeking my mother language explaining that person the nature of my distress.

However, in that specific case, there is no "right or wrong". Both ways are "right"...

I have not decided yet what sat provider i will use. Thuraya seems to be the best bang for the buck in that part of the world. Maybe i will add a Ham radio, just for extra safety.
