1900 containers lost near Hawaii

Apparently a container ship named "ONE Apus" has lost approximately 1900 containers in the Pacific 1600 miles NW of Hawaii!

I’m glad I’m not sailing north of Hawaii right now!

You and me both. I think that is a record for number lost at one time.

They might start showing up in Washington state in a few months.

Surfs up on the North Shore which is probably from the storm that caused the lost containers.

Modern Containerships are a compromise between safety and economy. The stats clearly show that it is working well but every so often Nature takes a hard hit and well some boxes go swimming.

Re: 1900 containers lost near Hawaii

As pointed out in the other thread on the same subject and as the headline in the link states:

Estimated 1,900 Containers Lost or Damaged

Why does everyone keep repeating the "1900 lost" when that is clearly not the case.

Looks like a lot of damaged but not lost containers on board:

I'll wait and see what the final tally is.

Probably because that is what I titled the thread.

I stand corrected. They will not know the exact total for a while.

One is too many though.

From another angle it's easy to see the extent of the loss, the noise on there would have been horrific....

Whoever was responsible for loading that ship is going to have some explaining to do.

Re: 1900 containers lost near Hawaii

Are there any maritime agencies that track containers that might still be floating?

Re: 1900 containers lost near Hawaii

If the boat was headed to Japan from the US chances are good there were a lot of empty containers in that load. If they were new and not tweaked by years of use and had good sealing on the doors there could be a goodly number still floating. The boats returning from the mainland from next summers races to Hawaii could have an interesting passage

Re: 1900 containers lost near Hawaii

The ship was on a journey from China to the USA, and they turned back mid pacific after the incident and headed towards Japan.
