42'-54' Bluewater Cruiser Monohull - Ready to Buy

Looking to buy a 42'-54' bluewater cruiser. Fiberglass preferred, steel & aluminum ok. Fine with some refit & repair needs, however not looking for a major project boat. A big plus if it is located around the Mediterranean, but Europe and Caribbean are fine. Eventual goal is circumnavigation through South Pacific. <7' draft. Yanmar or Volvo Penta. Up to $100K for a project boat and up to $150K for a recently refitted cruiser.

I will note on this thread when the search ends.

Lots of good boats out there. Here is one.

No interest inthe boat, just know about her.

Thanks, will look into it. Not too keen on non-white hulls, but keeping an open mind.

42-54’ covers a lot different features

Get a buyer broker, tell hom what you want and let him search for.

I have already sent out the wish-list to a number of buyer's brokers. In parallel doing my part to speed up the search.

I would be inclined to find one really competent broker to act for me. Need to get someone with a lot of experience so they have the contacts and someone you can trust. They do exist.

Also 42 to 54' is a huge range wrt to displacement, size, and cost. Something over 50' for for price range is going to be tired. I would look 42 to 46'. Personally I would stay away from Volvo engines, parts are ridiculously priced and many are turbo-diesels which is an unnecessary complication. Yanmar or Beta would be good as would finding a boat that has been re-engined within recent years. In your price/size range a lot of boats will have older engine with significant hours on them.

Re: 42'-54' Bluewater Cruiser Monohull - Ready to Buy

I have tried, and continuing to try the broker approach. Have also noticed good leads through by-owner mediums. Pursuing them in parallel.

Yanmar is my preference as well, and have already located an older design naturally aspirated new box in stock. So won't hesitate to re-power the boat if the situation calls for it. ($20-$30K depending on the install)

The age parameter has been a surprisingly evolving topic. After all the boats I have seen in person, I am now comfortable with a bluewater in the 1980s-1990s range, and a production boat in the 1998-2012 range.

The mast condition has been a deal breaker for some of the 1980s bluewaters I looked at. The corrosion has penetrated quite a bit and re-masting estimates came out around $40-$55K with a 3-5 month lead time.

Thanks boatman61. Sent an inquiry for the Moody. Will research the Freedom and Ocean Star as I haven't seen them before. Grand Soleil is a no-go due to the color and cockpit traveler.
