28-38ft Sailboat with raised saloon near SF for $15-20k

I work from home a lot. I'm planning on getting a boat and putting it in a slip in the Marina next to my house. I'd like to work from my boat, but I want to be where I can see outside. Most sailboats, you crawl down into the guts of the boat and are just in a cave. I'd like to get some real sun and be able to see around. Honestly, I don't even know if that's possible without spending a 100k

Additionally, my wife hates the wind, so when we go sailing, it will be me and my friends sailing the boat, while she and her friends sit inside and drink wine. They're not going to do it from down-below.

So, any ideas are welcome.

no motorboats. I'd be ok with a motor-sailor.... kinda. ugh...

I've been looking at a couple of pilothouse boats. I actually negotiated a price and had a hand-shake on this one: https://aldenpilothouse32.com but the owner said he got offered more money the next day, so I'm still in the hunt.

The saloon is down below. The deck part is above that. It does have 7'4" headroom down below. It's an east coast boat. Almost all of them are about ready to sink. I had to truck ours to SF

Maybe a catamaran that still floats but needs work after Irma.if you have a slip you could clean it out and fit it out from Home Depot as a floating home office.

Alcohol and sailing do not go well together.

Buy trips on cruisers. They all have broadband now and a dozen of bars onboard.

Everybody will be happy and safe this way.

You will also save on dock fees, taxes and boat upfront cost. And see places. All this being able to work and/or drink as you please.

Cheers,
b.

Originally, the plan was to ditch my office and get a boat big enough to work out of, with the savings from office rent going to the marina & boat, but it turns out the IRS is a bit sketchy about people deducting their boats. (I am an S Corp with just a couple part-time staff). So, moving to a boat was nixed.

The idea of a cat had occurred to me, but you need a wide slip and that's both hard to find and costly here in SF. Plus, the marina can get picky about your boat. It has to be approved, a survey done on boats older than 20 years, etc... Can't buy a project boat and park it anywhere here.

But if I had a ton of cash, I'd definitely try out one of the slick big cats. I've never been on one.
