Re: Northern Queensland to Darwin

Yes, last year I think, a snorkeler had an arm bitten by a croc. It's been relocated now.

I think he was swimming at night too, so the croc probably just beat the sharks to it.

Haven't heard about any recent croc attacks at Lizard but this was from just over 2 years ago....

Re: Northern Queensland to Darwin

There have been two snorkelers attacked by crocs at Lizard Island the last ten years.

Given the small number of people snorkelling the risks are much higher than usual and increasing as the croc population of FNQ increases.

Read all the way to the bottom.

SVSEACHANGE, I see the victims wife is quoted as saying...."“They don’t have any signs or anything up for crocs.”

A similar situation exists at Cape Leveque s' Kooljamin resort on the WA Kimberly coast.

They have signs directing (encouraging?) guests to the "SWIMMING BEACH" .

Judging by the size of the crocs around there , and the numbers of swimmers, its only a matter of time before the lawyers get involved.

We can't going scaring the guests now can we?

There are usually quite a few people snorkelling or diving there. Agree about croc populations though, there's no shortage of them, that's for sure!

My first job working on the water was up there, just on the other side of the peninsular at Cygnet Bay Pearls. To get away from the farm at weekends we would head over to Kooljaman, used to hire one of the beach shacks for $5 a day, lotsa swimming, snorkelling, spearfishing, picking up Painted Crays, BBQ's and beer drinking, great days......

Monday morning it was back to work diving on the farm, hell of a lot of Pearl divers throughout the Kimberley's....

Yer, I hear what your saying. In the early 80 s' before the light was automated the first beach shack was built by the lighthouse keepers for guests and travellers. They didn't like you driving on their only bit of bitumen (all 50 meters of it near the base of the light) to park next to it, so we used to leave the car at the keepers houses and walk. Hell it was free so no one was complaining.

The crocs have really made a come-back in a big way since their protection in 1970, as you would well know.

Billy Gibson was the last lighthouse keeper and was one of the ones that built the shacks, one been named after him. After the lighthouse he ended up working at Cygnet Bay Pearls eventually becoming manager, good bloke but could be a bit wild after living alone out in the sticks for so long.....

Last I heard he was living in Broome, he's getting on now though....

Edit: Forgot to mention, he used to hunt croc's around the peninsular, had a government contract if I remember to keep the numbers at bay around the aboriginal communities, all ended when they became protected, used to still get called when a problem one cropped up until full time rangers took over....

Re: Northern Queensland to Darwin

Lived in Wyndham in the 90s, the place was croc infested even then.

My grandmother and her sister were nurses in Broome and Derby in the 1930s. She always had a lot of good stories about the old Jap pearl divers.

My Grandfather flew the Port Headland to Daly Waters mail route.

They both had good shark stories but never talked about crocs. Croc populations must have been low back then.

I'm in favour of Katter's plan to start culling the damn things again. They breed like rabbits.

The humans you mean?

Not sure they are going to allow that.

Might involve a lot of paper work.
