Key West Advice - Anchorages

I am planning to spend the better part of a month in Key West (mid-April to mid-May).

I may grab a mooring ball but would also like to consider being on the hook. Any recommendations, areas to avoid? A good friend spent a few days off of Sunset Key, not too far from the ferry dock.

I am also interested in knowing the cell signal, as I will be working while I am there. And if anyone has advice for an external antennae.

Thanks, Mark/St. Pete, FL

Re: Key West Advice - Anchorages

Last I was there, you could anchor off Wysteria Island among the throng, or further east near Fleming Cay, just across the cut. People anchor all over the place going north from there, but it starts being a bit of a haul in the dinghy. If you're rowing, you have to stay close enough to get out/in regardless of wind and tide, which can get rowdy at times.

Re: Key West Advice - Anchorages

We just spent 3 months in the area. I won't say Key West proper as we found the anchorages in KW to be quite rough and exposed. If you don't mind being slightly out of the way you might look at anchoring in the Cow Key channel, or if you look at the Boca Chica channel then the "A" channel off the south you can anchor outside Stock Island Marina. Second one in particular well protected although there's some commercial traffic and its small.
