Wire gauge for wind gen

I have a 300w wind gen i’m installing. I will have a run of about 12ft to the controller and 20ft to my battery. The manufacturer included no information about wire recommendations. Its 12v btw

Re: Wire gauge for wind gen

300W/12V=25A
That would put the wire around 10 gauge with a 30A breaker.

I would personally upsize that to 8 gauge and a 40A breaker.

With appropriately rated wires in an installation I knew more about my recommendations might be different. Your primary source should always be the relevant code for where the boat will be sold eventually.

Re: Wire gauge for wind gen

Blue Sea has a wire size calculator on their website. Total wire length would be 2(20+12)=64'. Full output at 300W is 300/12=25A. That gets you to 4-8AWG wire depending on what voltage drop you want to use.

I think you'll rarely see 25A out of a wind generator, so I'd probably go somewhere in the 8AWG range (might even get away with 10AWG), you'll have a bit of voltage drop when it is really generating, but not much at average conditions and the wire is quite capable of the full generation amount if it ever needs to be.
