Re: New Wiring Diagram to Najad 34

Jsol and Dave

As I understand you all the neg has to flow through the shunt, except the starter? But then will the shunt not monitor the starter? Or do you give conflicting advice? I'm a bit confused.

About the 1-2-B SW. This is based on the links given by Stu, but i now re-wired to the suggestion maine sails suggest on the bottom of this article.

It would be great do have you look at the diagram Dave. I made it omnigraffle, in case you want the original file.

Dave and Jsol,

the wiring of the 1-2-B SW is based on this article.

I now rewired to the last picture on the article, which is redundant according to Maine Sails btw.

Would love to have you look at the diagram Dave. Its made in omnigraffle if you want that file I can send it to you.

For the Neg or ground, same concept except you put the shunt between the main Neg (battery side), then connect the shunts load side to the Buss Bar, and finally all other Neg to the Buss Bar.

You mentioned in your original post you wanted to keep this simple, so a 1/2/all is a good solution. Keep the switch to your house bank all the time and if you ever have to start the engine in an emergency you can flip the switch. This will prevent combining the dead bank with the good one and allow you to get home. The EC will take care of properly keeping your reserve battery topped up....hope this helps...
Golden Orchard,

This pic is of an install I'm in the middle of right now. While it is larger then yours, it follows the same concept I posted earlier.

Go back and look at my switching post. It is the most simple and elegant for anyone to use.

Flloyd,

You did not say anything about the c-post but i reckon it connects to the 12V panel, as it does now.

Is the setup according to your instructions now?

You're Close,

Take the common from the house switch to the house bus bar. Then take all house loads from the house bus bar, including inverter, not the switch. Do not tie the bus bar direct to battery.

You should put a ON/Off switch on the inverter positive wire.

I fuse each of the loads from the house bus bar. I install a master fuse at the house battery main pos. cable.

I use the input and output as descriptions instead of common.

Golden Orchid,

My suggestions are based on the article (and numerous other postings) by Maine Sail that you referenced above. I have wired my last 3 boats this way. I am by no means a professional marine electrician, so I will certainly defer to the advice you are getting here. One difference may be that I choose to use my House Bank for both House Loads and Starting. My Reserve Bank is there only for emergency starting, not as a dedicated starting Bank.
As for not putting the Starter/Reserve Neg behind the shunt, I don't understand this. Between the Battery Monitor instructions and MS explanations, all my loads are on the other side of the shunt. I realize I am only monitoring the House Bank, and that is all I care about due to the way I use my Reserve Bank. If you look at a recent post 'installing a Battery Monitor', MS has reiterated putting everything on the Load side. But I certainly could be missing something in the proposed setup....

Re: New Wiring Diagram to Najad 34

Guys, sorry for the delayed response. Busy with work and the boat.

Dave, that diagram sure makes it a lot clearer. Thanks a lot!

I will research a bit more, compare it to your diagram, and post questions here. I will also have a look at the boat and measure the cable lengths and estimate the fuses.

Re: New Wiring Diagram to Najad 34

I've been researching busbars a bit, and wondering if the setup down below looks OK.

I've taken Daves diagram and made an a pair of medium power busbars. I've connected all the inputs and the panel to it. Have not calculated correct amps but I think 150 bus bar should be enough.

The reason for the change in busbars is I thought it to be wise to separate the high and low power ones. If I want to connect more devices it would be easier to connect to the low power bars. And the high power ones does not have so many connections and they are a lot more pricey.

How is my thinking?

Is it ok to connect both inputs and outputs on the same bar?
