LiFePO4 battery recycling

I have 3 used Mastervolt 24v 5000 batteries and I’m looking to recycle. Any good ideas? East coast USA.

Call the State environmental agency

Towns rotate free Hazmat disposal days

Sometimes residents only

just ask

Batteries Plus might take them.

Put them on Craigslist...

Re: LiFePO4 battery recycling

I would second putting them in Craigslist. Selling them for $20 or for free is a lot easier than making all sorts of phone calls and driving all over town and trying to dispose of properly. Plus even if they only hold 10% of their rated charge, you’re doing some good for someone who is less fortunate.

Why are you getting rid of them? Mastervolt is replacing one of mine with a refurbished one at decent price.

I bet those things are $5000 each…. What’s wrong with them?

Yup - You can trade in for a refurbished one from Mastervolt for around $2k.

I lost a cell in one of mine- just out of warranty of course.

One batt is okay, one is ?maybe? recoverable and the third diagnosed as unrecoverable. The batts can be diagnosed by a dealer using an over the air or wifi setup. I’m guessing the main battery charger had intermittent failures and was a contributor to the problem.

I had a cell die (diagnosed by Mastervolt NL) in one of my two 24/5000 a few weeks ago. Of course, the battery is out of warranty. The two batteries weren't used much and only have 50 recharge cycles on them. Mastervolt suggested I purchase a refurbished battery at €2.1k. The alternative was to purchase 2 new 24/5500 at considerably more. This is all being handled by a Mastervolt dealer in the UK.

I called the US Mastervolt number, and they've not had many issues like this here in the states yet. But, they were very helpful. I'd suggest you give them a ring - 800-307-6702 and see what your options are. You might be able to get two refurbished batteries for far less than 3 new ones.

If you go the recycling route, find a battery store near you. Stevens Battery Warehouse here in Annapolis accepts batteries for recycle.

Re: LiFePO4 battery recycling

The batteries are in Mathews Va and I hope to arrive Tuesday night and be there for part of Wednesday. My current plan is to drive the batteries to CT and put them in storage until I have time to deal with them. The 3 batts went into service August 2015 and I don’t know how many cycles and depth. The boat has substantial solar and should had kept the voltage up but there was a snow. I’ll be talking with Rufus Van Gruisen at Cay electronics in Portsmouth RI.
