In Europe we call these type of crew positions `opstapper`in English this is `Crew which pays their part of the food and drink costs`. Lots of sailors jump at the opportunity to sail a luxury boat in one of the worlds best sailing destination

Re: 2014 sailing Croatia

Hi,

I'm very interested in joining you as volunteer crew for part of your trip. I went on a similar trip this past June. I spent 11 days as volunteer crew on a 40' cat sailing along the coast of Turkey. It was a great experience that I would like to repeat in Croatia.

This far in advance my dates are pretty flexible. I would prefer April or June. I've attached a copy of my sailing resume and personal information. Once you have had a chance to review it please let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,

Dennis

What if I do not want to eat with you, what if I want to eat by myself. you buy food for yourself I will buy food for me (or go to restaurant, we are not crossing Atlantic).
And I drink only plain/tap water, I will by bottle of water a day for me, you buy "drink" for yourself..

Opstapper? guess itīs illicit charter
In german called Schwarzcharter..
Croatian coast guard will be happy to get your boat...

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see anything illicit about this. Anyone who volunteers to join the boat as volunteer crew while the owner is sailing from place to place of the owner's choosing and pay only their fair share of expenses incurred is not chartering the boat. They are not paying the captain a fee for his services nor are they determining the destination. This is no different than a group of friends deciding to drive cross country in one of the friend's car and share expenses for gas, food and lodging. Just because people are paying their fair share of expenses doesn't make the car's owner a limo service. If the boat owner ask for more money that a fair share of the expenses for fuel, docking fees, food, etc. then you are getting into a questionable area. As long as the only money that changes hands is for a fair share of the expenses I don't see problem.

I belong to a sailing club that charters boats all over the world. Members sign up for the trip and split not only the expenses but also the cost of chartering the boat. There is no paid captain and everyone helps sail the boat. Does that make the club a chartering service? Apparently not because thay have been doing this for 30 years all over the world.

This is classic bare boat charter operating illegally or I am missing something

This is definitely NOT illicit. To my understanding, Sjaro is the owner of the yacht. The only thing is, ALL crew members have to be listed in the crew list. As long as the guests do not pay for onboard stay, everything is OK, they are guests, and not charterers.

I'm interested for June or possibly Sept. I speak Croatian and I'm familiar with waters of south Dalmatia.
