Van Sant's "Gentleman's Guide"

Bruce Van Sant's
"Gentleman's Guide to Passages South: The Thornless Path to Windward"

Any chance someone would have a copy that I could read? I would love to do some homework!

Cheers,
Hugh in Winnipeg

Re: Van Sant's "Gentleman's Guide"

I just looked at that list for sale. We had almost every one of those books onboard when we started cruising, plus many more not on that list. I dumped every single one of them except 3 just before transiting the Panama Canal in 2008. Wanted to get weight off the boat and use the area for additional food storage for the long Pacific crossing. As we had not once opened any of those books, it only seemed logical to get rid of them. I left them in a marina book swap area in Bocas del Toro. Wasted way too much money buying books that we 'thought' were necessary because others said so.

The only 3 books I kept:
Jimmy Cornell's World Cruising Routes
Chapman's Seamanship
Beth Leonard's Voyager's Handbook

I found Van Sant's Gentleman's Guide to Passages South to be of little benefit. But we started off from the BVI, so maybe it would be more helpful to those sailing south from the USA. I found the various Caribbean guides by Chris Doyle to be much more helpful for that region.

FWIW, I think Bruce may have a new edition in the works, to be released later in the year.

Re: Van Sant's "Gentleman's Guide"

Thank you all for the helpful replies. It's funny, I never think of Craigslist. For some reason unknown to me, it's not a resource that people in my part of the world seem to use...

I do like to read, so books that I buy wouldn't go unread; unless they're unreadable, I suppose. So, as long as I've read it and enjoyed it, it's not a waste!

It surprises me what people are askling for this book on that auction site!

I'll keep my eyes open, especially for a new addition!

Cheers,
Hugh

Re: Van Sant's "Gentleman's Guide"

I just received am email from Bruce and he has indeed done a 10th Edition. It is being processed by Amazon now and should be available soon. Too bad for those that bought the $800.00 copies. He did say that this will be the absolute last edition. He did send me a copy of the Table of Contents for the new Edition. Chuck
