Autohelm 4000 Wheel Drive Unit

For sale Autohelm 4000 wheel drive unit.

This is the older style with no electrical connecter on the motor. It works well, spins free and the clutch works just fine. The belt was replaced last year and it will come with a spare belt. All of the wheels inside spin freely and it has the upgraded aluminum drive gear. The only issue the unit has is one of the internal wheels have been repaired by drilling thru the plastic mount and installing a screw(see picture). This is a common issue with older drive units. It has no effect on the performance of the unit. The electrical lead is about 8 inches long.

This was hooked up to my Raymarine S1G autopilot last year and it worked great, no issues at all.

$225 + shipping.

Re: HELP NEEDED Autohelm 4000 Wheel Drive Unit

Hi… I have this same unit and have a help question for anyone who may know.., I'm in the Bahamas now and this thing has broken down on me. The problem appears to be with the small pinion gear that guides the belt. Evidently, something broke off that holds the pinion gear tightly to the stem, or post, that is inserted into it. The parts schematic does not show any parts that attached it to the stem… and I wonder why the hole in the pinion gear has "ears" on each side of the hole… all mechanics work, except you can hear it trying to grab,, but it can't because it is slipping on the pinion gear… something has go to be there that holds that gear snug to the post… but I can't find it on the schematic for the life of me… any suggestions anybody?? I can send photos if needed. thanks,

Joe S/V Glory Days

I don't know if I can help you exactly with your problem but I had a problem with mine last year where the lever clutch wouldn't engage. If I know Raymarine the gear you're referring to requires a hardened steel expansion pin driven into it. MAYBE....that's the problem. My guess is if the gear is spinning then something must be pinned.

Here, take a look at this;

Re: Autohelm 4000 Wheel Drive Unit

I have the same unit, and it will function properly, then suddenly try to make a 180 degree turn. I'm assuming it's a problem with the control unit. Does anyone agree/disagree?

Re: Autohelm 4000 Wheel Drive Unit

Tranquilo2014: Most likely your problem is with the control unit. The wheel drive would not cause that type of reaction on its own. It could also be a problem with the fluxgate compass sensor or a large metal object or magnet in the immediate vicinity of it. You should post this to the general sailing forum rather than on the classified area for a better response.

Re: HELP NEEDED Autohelm 4000 Wheel Drive Unit

I suggest checking the small rolled pin that pins the clutch lever to the shaft. If this is sheared, replace with a new pin or cotter pin. If the plastic clutch lever itself is cracked, you will need to replace the clutch lever as well. This part is not readily available. I had a new one fabricated from aluminum at a machine shop.
