Scott, is "Oceanview" the Mahe I'm presently looking at out of my cockpit in Cocoa? We are at anchor off the marina there right now and will be heading to Miami next week and over to Gun Cay then to Nassau also.

Any thoughts?

When we have run for a while under motor recently we are getting a strong diesel/rubber smell in the cupboard under the sink and in the area where the fuel lines run (inside the small "hatch" in the starboard cockpit combing under the helm seat).

Anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on what might be causing this.

We have not spilt diesel when filling but when we last filled up we did fill up pretty close to 100% full.

I have never smelled diesel/rubber on my MAHE, but I have smelled it on another boat I owned when I forgot to open the water inlet to the engine. The smell came from the exhaust riser heating the large rubber hose going to the aqua lift muffler. If your impeller is bad that would make the same smell because your engine is overheating.

Your Stb. Engine bay heat goes up to the fuel tank area and forward to the front of the tank which is just under your sink.

Sounds like your engine is over heating.

Use a poratable temp. gage on the Stb. engine when its running and also feel the large black hose leading out of the back of the engine going into the grey plastic aqua lift muffler. Nothing should be to hot to touch because its all water cooled.

When did you last slip? Perhaps the water intake holes on the leg are fouled with growth? Last year I had to clean mine a couple of times. The water flow out the exhaust should give you an indication.

I have never smelled any rubber/diesel smell on Reflexion.

I agree that you maybe overheating, The "Mark's" makes a good point, I regularly have to use a wire coat hanger to clean out the 3 holes in the leading edge of the sail drive because of growth clogging them. I have thought about putting in a thru hull fitting and bypass the sail legs as intakes for cooling, they are just too small. Also, I spoke with another MAHE owner, and they lost thier port engine because the intakes on the sail legs got fouled by a plastic bag, it wrapped itself around the drive while under way. Also, keep your vent to the fuel tank clean, I use a tooth brush to clean the screen on mine.
Well off the the Exumas with IrieCat for a few months, leaving this Saturday. Will check in as I can.

Daniel your engine is probably overheating.The first thing I would do is watch the waterflow at the exhaust,this will be your first indication.It could be several things. Your impeller is bad in the raw water pump,next remove the hose coming from the ball valve,open the valve and make sure the flow is good,mine was completely fowled with barnicles so you need to run something through and it will clear up,next like Scott says it could be the water fins on the sail drive itself.good luck.

Martin the vent is located under the bridgedeck. It has a little screen that is always plugged up with salt....I use a little wire brush.

Martin,

Your Fuel Vent is under the bridge deck to the right of your Saloon sink drain.
The Fuel Vent is silver and has a screen in it that as Scott & JC said should be cleaned of any salt deposits which may stop air flow.

Scott & JC recommend using a small tooth brush or wire brush to clean the screen which works great.

As a pet project I am going to move this Fuel Vent to another location so it will not get salted or splashed.

Three boats just pulled into Bermuda a few weeks ago and had to pump out their fuel tanks because water got power blasted into the fuel vent. Keep in mind none of them where Mahe’s but one was a 50 foot Cat with a professional captain and crew and the vent was below the bridge deck.

Thanks for the info, I thought it was a gas drain!
Is this meant to act as an overflow as well? I have never had any diesel discharge when filling and was wondering how it was vented.

Martin,

The Fuel Vent is both a vent and a fuel overflow, but where it is under the bridgedeck, you can't see it when your diesel overflows.
You may be able to hear it hitting the water. Not so good.
