Orana 44: Dumb Electrical Question

Hi All,

How likely is it that a 2010 FP Orana CAT would have an inverter for the house batteries so that you would have 110v service while sailing ? Is this pretty much standard on larger CATs ? It will have a Generator, but was hoping I would not have to run that all the time in order to power a PC, Toaster or the like... I will be chartering one of these on Cheasapeake this summer... just wondering... Help !

You can put an inverter on any boat and will be present on most larger boats however if you have significant loads like a toaster you will draw down your batteries at a fast rate. For running a PC you are better off getting a DC plug in charger as it will be more efficient than using an inverter.

We use a small inverter that does about 150 watts from the cigarette lighter socket. Its made for cars to recharge computers etc.

Works everything we need. We dont have a toaster.. they draw a bit. But works my soldering iron, all camera batteries etc etc.

Don't go buy an expensive one unleass you really need it. Mine was about $50

This question is for Scott.
I just had to replace the starting solenoid on the generator and noticed that there was a lot of rust on the back of the unit,probably the the exaust system,so my question is how long is the warranty on the nextgen unit? Thanks.

I would think that it is very likely it will have an inverter. A call to the chartering company will confirm it though.

Warranty is up. Check the exhaust mixer to see if it is leaking. Also do you see any salt in the bottom of the enclosure? If you do then you have a rotting Exhaust mixer. Mine actually blew apart in the Exumas (the can broke away at the weld to the pipe that goes to the exhaust on the engine). You don't want that to happen because you will introduce salt water into the cylinder and blow the motor, which is what happened to me. I had to pull the motor and send it back to NextGen to have it rebuilt ($1200!!). To replace the exhaust mixer is pretty easy, you can buy a new one from NextGen for around $400, don't wait if it is rusting. Also how are your zincs, I find I'm replacing it every 3 months.

Ours has an inverter but I do not know if it was standard. I do not think so though.

Bring your own portable inverter for the computer just in case it doesn't have one. Make toast on the stove.
