Waypoints or Routes are not processed by OpenCPN though the NMEA sentences required are coming in from the plotter.

You can do this using the JavaScript plugin. The user guide for the plugin includes some demonstration scripts and Build routes from NMEA sentences does what you want, I think. It creates waypoints and routes from WPL & RTE sentences and updates thm if the NMEA sentences repeat. You can tweak this script if needed.

There is also a script sendActive Route.js which does the reverse - sends the active route out over NMEA as a series of WPL & RTE sentences togther with a BOD sentence to keep the other system up to date with progress along the route.
