Re: USER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED NOW!

Migration & change media image links. - 2 more volunteers needed. - Presently Fabbian & rgleason.

Correct internal and external document links - 3 more volunteers needed!

If the entire Wiki is going to be ready by January, we've got to get a lot done starting now.

USER VOLUNTERS NEEDED!
Maintaining the Opencpn User Manual and other books is the User group's responsibility, otherwise programmers will have to take valuable time to do this task. We need eight dedicated volunteers to join this essential team, to migrate the four wiki books - Opencpn User Manual, Supplementary Hardware, Supplrmentary Software and Developer Manual.

Also we need editors to update create and improve the user documentation for a number of plugins. Some of these are,
SAR, Weatherfax, Weather_routing, Navico Radar, Climatology, ODraw, etc.

Re: User Volunteers Needed Now!

Drew K, [mrdrew] I have your information and will be setting you up to edit as a manager.

You are the first to volunteer via this post. Thank you.
Looking forward to working with you.

To others who are considering lending a shoulder to this wheel, we are looking for 8 brave & skilled men (or women) to help!

If you would like to help we would really appreciate a PM via clicking on my sailboat icon and write me with your email stating what editing skills you have. Notepad, Word, Wiki, etc. and if you understand a little html and pathnames.
That's all it takes really!

This can be fun, like a barn raising! You're only going to be doing an hour or two a day, whatever you like, and very soon you'll have a brand new O-wiki that runs great on a cellphone even!

All the guys that helped with the 4.0 user manual update are welcome to join in, you guys really shouldn't be bashful...You're a great team. Many hands make light work.

Thanks Rick

Re: User Volunteers Needed Now!

Drew [mrdrew]
Let's welcome Drew as a new Editor of the Owiki. Drew advises:

Quote:
I enjoy technology and melding it with my career on boats. Tech has been seeping into it more and more, especially in my commercial tug boating field.

I believe in open source software, and while I'm no coder, I can learn, use, and write about software. I'm happy to help as I'm able.
The Owiki registration does not have a working email server on purpose, it will when we move the wiki to a dedicated Opencpn server. For the time being I have to email you a password, which has now been done.

Thank you Drew. Next page will provide some Resources.

How to start Editing

Drew, Check your PM Messages in the CP Panel!

Owiki Edit User Manual
Look down below for Editors Notes
- Also read Fabbian's posts he has good observations.

Editors

Dokuwiki Manual

Dokuwiki User Forum

Search for rgleason threads Dokuwiki -mostly about configuration

Opencpn Dokuwiki - Comments thread edit information

Help Needed - How to Start Editing this thread with information about editing

You could start by reading about the process a little,
then try to copy one of the Supplementary Hardware or Software pages from
http://opencpn.org
to the Owiki Supplementary Hardware [Opencpn]
where these pages are all blank.
I'd like you to stay working in one of these 'Books' / 'Namespaces' and build it up until it is complete.
If you would like me to make a backup of the whole wiki at some point, let me know. I am in the process of setting up a more automated backup and will do it occassionally until then.

Good Luck

Then try to get the media or image links pointing correctly. Learn about the Media Manager. We are putting all images for the Hardware, under opencpn:hardware for example.

Re: User Volunteers Needed Now!

Drew needs a buddy to help with migration of the hardware page. Its much easier to work together on a book.

So someone venture forward and pm me to be an editor to work on migration of the hardware book please. We don't want to loose all that good stuff about ais, serial connections, rs232, etc do we?

Drew needs a buddy to work with him on this.

First task is to save all the screenshots in hardware (right click -save as to your pc. Then use dokuwiki media manager to upload then all to the opencpn: hardware folder!

Then the next task is to start migrating (copy and paste all the hardware pages over to dokuwiki. The majority of the pages have been created so you just have to paste them in below the title please! when in the Ck Editor mode (recieves html nicely). See the editors notes page for dtep by step.

Owiki -Developer Pages growing fast

Mike Rossiter [Rasbats] has been doing a great job with the Developer pages. Thanks Mike!
Check his work out here:
Developer Manual [Opencpn]
This is a great example of what can be accomplished in several days.

Also see how much has been completed Summary of Progress
The sooner this Owiki is completed, the sooner you'll be able to use the new website. Drupal 6 is at "End of Life".

We still need Editors. Do the Community and yourself a favor and help build the next Owiki!

Re: User Volunteers Needed Now!

Yes, but it is very easy to mess things up!

Brought up the Prerequisites page of the Developer Guide this morning and edited a couple of links. Saved.

This caused the start page of the Developer Guide to become a blank page.

And now the Developer Manual page is also blank.

HELP

Hope Rick has a back-up because I have tried using some previous revisions, without success.

Maybe best if editors waited until the situation has normalised.

Sorry.

Mike

I was going to get started in earnest this morning, I'll tread carefully. Maybe I'll be giving you a call...

Yes, there are backups.

Mike was editing this morning and the server puked, (too many backups maybe, causing 30gb to be 100% used) leaving him with no page and the rest of the documentation with a bad index. We managed to repair it by taking a page from the "attic" that Mike suggested by looking at "Recent Changes" and I think we have restored the basic "preregisites" page that was lost. Then I exercised the cache by opening all pages in O_User_Manual and most in Dev_Manual.

After a little work sprucing up these initial pages. I think its working fine.
From Myron and Scott who are very active on the Dokuwiki forum, there is an indexer.php we can run when this happens to rebuild the index.

Had this happened in Druple6 we would have been stuck in mysql hell and would have restored the most recent backup.

I've cleaned up what I could on the server and asked my support person to see what he can do. I am going to review what we are backing up and how much next, but for now, I only have 2.5gb free and I know I deleted 4gb of 2week old backup files. I may have to set this up to go to S3 amazon like our website backups.

Just do a nightly full backup (without cache) at midnight, send it to a separate S3 container. Then have that container delete all backups that are older than 1 week? Incremental with Dump is not working in Webmin for me.

Mike, very sorry about that. I should have noticed that the server was getting slow... Yes, you can have two page instances open to copy pathnames, I've done that a lot.

Let me know if it looks all right now.

Fixed the start page with Editor's Corner

PS: Owiki - OpenCPN Books -main page

So we don't duplicate efforts:
1. Start at the beginning of a book, or pickup where someone has left off with a Progress marker.
2. Leave a Progress Marker, what you were doing & your signature where you've stopped.
3. When finishing a session, edit & update the Summary of Progress page with what you did and initials.

Others will then know where to start and what to do. Thanks.
