Toolbar tooltips missing or erratic

I've seen this on two different computers and two different versions of OpenCPN now. Previously, collapsing the toolbar and re-expanding it has solved the problem, but not now.

The vast majority of the time, I get no tooltips off the toolbar, just a thin black line where they should be (see attached image). It's not the end of the world, but won't make life easier next week afloat with two crew who aren't familiar with OpenCPN. I've tried changing the size of the window and that doesn't help.

Occasionally, a tooltip will actually show up. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which button produces it or when.

Any ideas? Given I've experienced it on two different systems, I'm guessing I can't be alone, but have failed to turn up an answer with my searching.

This particular system is OpenCPN 5.6.2 on BBN Linux running on a Raspberry Pi.
