Raspberry PI compiles OpenCPN

I've ordered a Raspberry PI to mess with, but since I wasn't one of the lucky first 10000 people that got one in the first batch, I set up the qemu ARM emulator, with the Fedora Remix distribution to get started.

After some messing around with dependencies, I was able to successfully compile opencpn! I have an issue with getting my keyboard to be recognized by Fedora Remix, but was able to launch OpenCPN on a remote X server to verify that it at least works. Did not do an extensive test of any of the functions, but if anyone else has been wondering about using the PI as an onboard navigation computer, it is looking very promising!

For those that have no idea what the Raspberry PI is, the model b version is basically a circuit board with an ARM soc cpu, 512MB memory, SD card reader to add storage/os (Linux), sound output, HDMI, Ethernet and couple of USB ports and some GPIO pins, all for $35 and just a little larger than a credit card...

Re: Raspberry PI compiles OpenCPN

What a coincidence I was just at the RaspberryPi website a few minutes ago wondering if opencpn would work on it. I'm thinking of ordering one myself, looks like there is a quite a backlog of orders though.

Somehow my order was doubled - to two to ship mid July?
I can see a brand new open source chart plotter on the near horizon

Re: Raspberry PI compiles OpenCPN

Guys...
Please let us know how does the performance look like as soon as you get your boards. From the specs RPi unfortunately looks a little bit underpowered to run OpenCPN in a way pleasing an unpatient navigator - something from the Panda/Beagle/Origin/Snowball family of boards is probably more appropriate, but of course they are the size of two credit cards and the price tag is quite a few bucks higher

Thanks

Pavel

Mine is also a few months out, and I am also very curious about performance, which is hard to gauge in the emulator. When I get some more time, I'll try to test it a bit more.

Just to correct a typo in my first post.. The PI has 256Mb of RAM, not 512Mb. Sorry!
