Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Hola NoHal,

Thanks for your help. It seems we have isolated the trouble; logfile:

Chart datum {unknown} invalid on chart /home/users/marinux/Documents/NORTH_ATLANTIC_OCEAN_(NORTH_AMERICA_TO_AFRICA).KAP

Here are some great scale charts performed with the imgkap with the tag GD=unknown.

http://download.tuxfamily.org/xinutop/charts/

I think it's a know problem but I have difficulties to consult willkamp website (from my location ?). Terribly slow, unworkable.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

When moving from one skewed chart to an adjacent skewed chart (ICWW), Enable Chart Quilting gets turned off. I don't remembet this happening in previous versions.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

David,

OpenCPN does not quilt skewed charts (unless the skew angle is small). So, single chart mode is used to display the skewed chart. When you get to a north-up Mercator chart, quilting resumes.

Would it be useful to quilt skewed charts?

1.I go to options>display and Click on Enable chart quilting
2. I go to a ICWW skewed chart and select the chart from the chart bar
3. I return to Options>display and Enable chart quilting is no longer selected
4. I pan over to the coast and a single (non skewed) chart is selected; no more quilting.

It may have always behaved this way; but, should it? When you're sitting at a desk... no problem. In the cockpit I think it's a different story.

Skewed charts have only troubled me when going down the ICWW. They are all skewed. With auto follow on the transition from chart to chart is pretty smooth. The only real problem occurs when there is a larger scale chart in the area (e.g. harbor chart) and Opencpn selects this chart instead of the next ICWW chart. To combat this I made a group eliminating the larger scale charts.

NY City area seems to have some skewed charts. Maybe someone from there would comment.

You can always use the ENC charts for the areas where skewed charts are a bother

Finally back on Gray Hawk so I can play with V4. My immediate impression is that it gets really sluggish as soon as I activate a route. It's still usable but pans and zooms lag my touch or mouse by 1 to 3 seconds. It's only evident when a route is active.

Bob...
Type of charts? OpenGL on/off? If raster charts, is your texture cache already populated?

Bob...
Is there any reason to sacrifice about 90% of the performance? Eg. OpenGL does not work for you? Texture cache is generated for raster charts to further improve performance in OpenGL mode.

OGL is greyed out in options. What am I missing? (Better type slow -- it's been a bad day)

Bob...
Anything in the log? What is your hardware? Does it have any problems with other applications intensive on graphics? (If I count well, it's been about 800 long bad days in a row here. But of course I could have quit at any single one of them... Anyway, it's without any doubt the longest streak of bad days in my life )

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Maybe it is grayed out because launched the no_opengl option from the command line (or shortcut) ?

Otherwise the test program to detect opengl failed, or it was compiled without opengl support.

I just d-l'd the installer package the same as I always do. Maybe I'll do a reinstall.

Quilting will come back on automatically once you get off the skewed chart. Try panning over away from the skewed chart or just selecting a different chart using the blue or green bars at the bottom of the screen. Skewed charts are indicated at the bottom with a red diagonal strip in the blue bar. Click one that isn't skewed.

This issue does not arise for ENC charts.
