OpenCPN Dave Register Android 11

I wanted to install my CM93.zip, as done with Windows and Linux, and extracted it at

/storage/emulated/0/Download

Initializing in OpenCPN seems impossible as OpenCPN seems to get stucked in an endless loop. And yes the rights for OpenCPN were set to all rights for file access.

Any suggestions?

This Android ist really the last scrap we were treated with. Even with total commander I could not even find the OpenCPN directory to copy the charts into it.

Pffffff...

Android 11 imposes new restrictions on file access. The idea is called "Scoped Storage." In this model, apps can only access their their own private data, which would be found in the app's home directory. In the case of OpenCPN, the home directory is:

"/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/org.opencpn.opencpn/files"

Specifically, apps can no longer freely access anything in the root of internal storage, i.e. "/storage/emulated/0".

You have two choices to move the charts from "Download" to the OpenCPN private directory.

1. Connect the device to a WIndows PC, using USB cable. Currently, all normal files and directories are available for access and copy from Windows explorer.

2. Use one of the very few Android File Managers that is capable of working on Android 11. The best we have found is "Xplore"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...atgames.Xplore

OpenCPN for Android will soon be updated to more clearly follow the Google requirements for data access on Android 11.

Thanks, and Good Luck
Dave

Interesting: I use Android 11 and have no issues (yet?) with having my charts (CM93 included) in their own folder not related to Opencpn.

Re: OpenCPN Dave Register Android 11

It took around 2 hrs to initialize the charts within OpenCPN. The app is terrible slow. The tablet has 4 Gb RAM and an octocore CPU.

sv_pelagia...

On Android 11, OpenCPN for Android 5.2.8[81] is currently operating under a one-time "loophole" provided by Google to ease transition to Scoped Storage. By this "loophole", legacy apps like OCPN will mostly see the file system as though the host is Android/10, instead of Android/11. That means, full access to /storage/emulated/0.

The time window for that "loophole" has now closed. The next Release of OpenCPN for Android, coming in a few weeks, will close the "loophole". OpenCPN will then be bound by the Scoped Storage model requirements.

Hint:
Use a compatible file manager, and migrate your charts to the OpenCPN's home directory now, if possible. I suggest

"/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/org.opencpn.opencpn/files/Charts"
It will make your life easier when OCPN is next upgraded.

Thanks

Dave,
Doesn't seem possible for me:

1) No opencpn folder under Data folder
2) will not allow me to create folder with periods

I've been wondering about this issue already: I've tried to find the folder for tides.

I've checked show hidden files, so am unclear as to what's up.

Tx,
David

CM93 BUT I was an idiot! the actually unzip directory was ../CM93/cm93 and I inserted the path .../CM93 into OpenCPN. The init took around 5 minutes but the chart loading was slow too. Therefore I am now trying to use windows to copy the fies to daid location.

I'll revert when the mission is accomplished

Dave:

This all seems crazy!

Had to connect Android to PC to copy chart files to hidden folder. (Not great for those without PC (or MAC? etc) to do this.)

How to do within Android?

Also: will I be able to select chart folder (hidden under data) once in OpenCPN?

What about waypoint files?

*Makes me question doing future updates....

Copied files to android/data etc folder. BUT when I go to select these new folders, it just seems to "default" to my original CHARTS folder on tablet root folder.

No idea what to do (EXCEPT to not update before this is clear!)

Screenshot shows my tablet hidden folder:

Any other new features / improvements we can expect in this release? Some kind of roadmap would be nice.

BTW, as much as I like OpenCPN, it's always felt a bit "clunky" on Android, and the non-native menus are a big part of this. Some general polish would go a long way towards de-throning Navionics as the go-to navigation app.

To be clear, I'm saying this as someone who's bought an Android tablet just to run OpenCPN at the helm as a chartplotter (I'm a big fan).

Re: OpenCPN Dave Register Android 11

I very much like Android OpenCPN.

This coming file issue seems quite serious; serious enough that I will NOT UPDATE until I'm satisfied all is fine. (Happily, I can test on a different tablet.)

ALSO: does this coming change mean we cannot store charts (etc) on a SD card?

Navionics app is a joke -- SO limited! And I have learned the charts cannot be trusted to be up-to-date.
