Re: New Grib Presentation
Hi all..
Not sure we are talking about the same thing, but please note:
Quote:
You will be pleased to learn I have just spoken with the developers of the European grib2 stream data service who promised to develop a conversion feature to the standard grib format, enabling most Windows based programs to access the data.
As one of the team, privately has engaged himself in this task,it will take a little longer, but the main thing is,we will soon again be able to access the data.
I have created a facility to use this stream data on any Android device.
Download it here:

Re: New Grib Presentation
What happened to the Data Display Preference dialog, seen on a few screen dumps in this thread? Is it still available? If so, how?
If not, how do you control what is displayed in the Grib Display Control?

Re: New Grib Presentation
Thomas,
When you send your saildocs request you are given the option of specifying the information you require.
When you open the grib with the plugin you will have the option of choosing any or all of the data fields (see the attached snapshot).

Re: New Grib Presentation
Thanks Rasbats for the hint.
It looks like the Grib Display Control auto adjust to available data, so there is no need for the (old) "Data Display Preference dialog"

Thomas, that is correct there is "Automatic Data Type sensing" and the Display shows only the Data Types available.
Now we need the ability to read two grib files.
Can do it in Linux and Windows with two separately named grib_pi.dll & grib2_pi.dll and run a different grib in each plugin. Why? So that we can use a "Currents" grib and a "Wind" grib for WeatherRouting. --It works using separate grib plugins and files, in both Linux and Windows.
It seems like the grib_pi plugin could be improved to read two files rather simply, because it already works as two separate files.

Re: New Grib Presentation
Problems displaying tidal stream color and current speed.
Quote:
Hello Tore,
Opencpn showed the file even name .grb1. Arrows of uniform size, colors indicating strength of the current.
The Routing program grib routines are essentially zygrib, which does not read the format , for unknown reasons. Zygrib does not read the BSH data as provided until December 2012.
Might be a parameter problem or a problem with the timestep being not hours but minutes.

Re: New Grib Presentation
I'm trying to understand what's going on in the new grib plugin and came to the Grib Preference Dialog.
#3."Copy first Cumulative Missing Record"
What does it mean and what is the purpose?
It does not make much sense to me.
#4."Copy Missing Wave Record"
What does it mean and what is the purpose?
How can you copy a missing record?
It does not make much sense to me.
An explanation please, "Ptizef" or "Boat Alexandra".

Re: New Grib Presentation
rgleason..
Where do you find the grib2_pi.dll ??
And why does the Send Grib Request not have GMAIL as an option but instead a couple of Russian ? email servers? Can not see how to chose your own preference.
Can no longer display the colorful stream velocities in OpenCPN v. 3.3.814 from old or the new (converted) .grb stream files ??

-To load a current grib and a wind grib at the same time.
Tore
1. Copy grib_pi.dll to gribA_pi.dll. Put it in your plugins directory.
2. Run Opencpn, set Options/Plugins and enable both grib and gribA. (sorry should not have written grib2, its too confusing)
3. Then load a wind grib with one of the plugins, and a current grib with the other. Weather_routing will use both data sets.
Would like grib_pi enhanced to run two files, or a simple utility to join them.

Would also like ability for user to enter more specifics, certain requests from different services, etc. and to save those for later.
Jean Pierre or Sean will have to answer your other questions.
I suggest you make your requests clearer and more specific and add to Tracker pi_grib project. It would be very helpful.

I understand what you mean, but perhaps you could enter this in Tracker, more specifically and show us why we need Grib2 support too? - Or ADD to an existing Task! and VOTE.

Re: New Grib Presentation
FYI the converted .grb files from ftp://ftp.bsh.de/Stroemungsvorhersagen/grib1/
no longer work in either qtVlm or OCPN with the following messages attached.
The developers of qtVlm tells me that they are very shortly going to have a new release compatible with .grb2 so that is good news. From here we just copy/paste the Optimized Route in .kml format to OCPN.

Re: New Grib Presentation
Wondering if it is possible to support downloading of grib files from a web service from the plug-in?
This is not meant to be an endorsement of grib.us however they expose access to their services via a set of XML Web Services. From what I can tell they are simply slicing and dicing NOAA grib data
The grib.us service reference is located at GribService Web Service
The following is a snippet of some VB code that successfully downloads a grib file. If it was possible to get the OpenCPN Viewport lat & long co-ordinates, the correct request could be constructed.
'Issue a ping request and check if service is alive
Dim GribClient AsNew GribUSWebService.GribServiceSoapClient("GribServiceSoap")
MsgBox("Ping Response: " & GribClient.Ping)
'BUG BUG how is strHDD constructed ? sniffed from fiddler
'BUG BUG Application version number is from the grib.us client app, also checked with fiddler
'BUG BUG response is either OK or register if incorrect strHDD provided, guess it could be ignored, Assume ping would fail if service unavailable ?
MsgBox("Server Live: " & GribClient.Server_Live("18623310864f67bcb65601700", "0.2.4.0"))
'BUG BUG should format the run time into human readable date time string
MsgBox("ModelRunTime: " & GribClient.GetModelRunTime())
Try
'BUG BUG Construct lat & long pairs from screen view port
'BUG BUG Use checkboxes in UI to select grib parameters wind u & v components etc.
'BUG BUG Investigate RequestGribFileSubsetCompressed it's not using bzip !
Dim filename AsString = GribClient.RequestGribFileSubset(35.0, 22.0, 40.0, 28.0, 0.5, 3, 5, "33,34,2,61")
Dim filesize AsLong = GribClient.GetFileSize(filename)
If MsgBox("Retrieve " & filesize & " bytes from: " & filename, MsgBoxStyle.Information + MsgBoxStyle.OkCancel).Equals(MsgBoxResult.Cancel) Then
ExitSub
EndIf
'To download the grib file just do a HTTP get on the filename
Dim request As HttpWebRequest = WebRequest.Create("http://gribservice.grib.us/gribdata/" & filename)
request.KeepAlive = False
request.ProtocolVersion = HttpVersion.Version11
request.Method = "GET"
request.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded;charset=UTF-8"
Try
Dim response As HttpWebResponse = request.GetResponse()
SelectCase response.StatusCode
Case HttpStatusCode.OK
'BUG BUG Construct a proper file name
'BUG BUG If requesting a compressed file append yje correct extension instead of GRB
Dim gribFile AsString =
System.Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.Speci alFolder.MyDocuments) & "\TestGrib.grb"
Dim gribFileStream As System.IO.BinaryReader = New System.IO.BinaryReader(response.GetResponseStream)
System.IO.File.WriteAllBytes(gribFile, gribFileStream.ReadBytes(filesize))
MsgBox("Written " & gribFile)
CaseElse
MsgBox("Unable to retrieve file: " & response.StatusCode & vbCrLf & response.StatusDescription)
EndSelect
Catch ex As Exception
MsgBox(ex.Message)
EndTry
Catch ex As Exception
MsgBox(ex.Message)
EndTry

Re: New Grib Presentation
While I quite like the main new grib dialog, I find problems with the different settings dialogs. See my earlier post and the bug entries in the tracker.
Have a look at the Grib settings dialog:
This is really confusing. We are looking at the "Air Temperature" settings.
Things like "Barbed Arrows" and "Direction Arrows" an "Iso Bars" does not make sense at all in relation to "Air Temperature".
Similar arguments can be made for the other "headers", not just "Air Temperature".
I think it would be better if the "Display" options were in tab format. Each tab would then only contain the applicable, relevant, settings.
