need help with open cpn connect to em-trak b100 AIS

I just went from windows to Lubuntu 12.04 on an old ASUS eeepc 4G
I am using Open cpn 3.2.2
I have a gps dongle connected via USB using gpsd.
This works fine.
However open cpn does not want to connect to my em trak b 100 AIS.
When I go to the command terminal and give the commands
"lsusb"
"cd /dev"
"ls"

I see it is connected as "ttyACM0"

Then I setup a new connection in opencpn as serial, dataport: /dev/ttyACM0 baudrate 38400.

But still nothing happens.

Any help would greately appreciated.

Please note I am a new user of ubuntu but so far the internet has helped me find everything else.

I just ordered one for my laptop.

I'll be trying to learn with you.

ccgarnaal...
Your logfile? Anything in the NMEA debug window? And last but not least - any AIS transmitting vessels in your reach?

Does the "user" you use to run linux belong to the group "dialout"?

More on this page Setting Up GPS | Official OpenCPN Homepage, check the Linux section.

The dial out group was indeed the problem.
Changed that, then still had to reboot, remove and add the connection again.
But it's working now.

Okay, not quite there yet apparantly.

When I reboot the system open cpn opens automatically as i configured it, gps dongle works imediately.
But ais doesn't, when i go to connections click on the ais connecting and press apply it works.

But why doesn't it work imediately after start up like it used to on windows.
