How do I Update OpenCPN on a Raspberry Pi

I have a Raspberry Pi 4 on which I installed OpenCPN Version 5.2.4 using the OpenPlotter method.

I was able to easily upgrade the Desktop version of OpenCPN to the new 5.6.0 version, but I don't see how to do the same with the Pi. Do I have to start all over again with the latest OpenPlotter install, or is there a way to upgrade and save all the work I have done getting the Pi version configured the way I want it?

My aim is to use the PC version for trip planning and use the Pi setup as the primary chartplotter on the boat.

Thanks in advance for any guidance I may get.

The OpenCPN version are now in the reposities. Simply do this command:

sudo apt install opencpn

But I'am not sure if you get then the latest 5.6 version. Then you have to do some other actions. But try this first.

Are you using a 32 version of the OS or allready a 64 version ?

Then there is the option of the flatpak version.

Thanks for the reply.

When I run the command you suggested I get the reply: Opencpn is already the newest version (5.2.4.0)

Perhaps the 5.6.0 version isn't available for the Pi yet?

I am running the 64 bit version of the Pi.

Re: How do I Update OpenCPN on a Raspberry Pi

Hi R. Bush,

then I recommand the Flatpak version. Then you get OpenCPN 5.6 with all the plugins.

With Flatpak OpenCPN in an own enviroment.

At first you must install the enviroment:

sudo apt install flatpak

Then the OpenCPn flatpak version:
flatpak install --user https://dl.flathub.org/repo/appstrea...CPN.flatpakref

Starting the first time:

flatpak run org.opencpn.OpenCPN

Thereafter you get an icon.

updating is: the same but update instead of run

Hope the the installation comes over well, because it is here outside the screen.

You can go into the settings app in open plotter and update the lists and the update will be in there. Then simply click “instal”. It’s what I did and it all worked fine.

The Flatpak version is no longer dependent on the OS version and is universal for all the Linux versions. It will be only available for 64 bits OS systems.

If you have allready the basic OpenCPn on your system. After the Flatpak version you have two OpenCPN versions.

If you like to use the opencpn.conf. You find this on a different location:

.var/apps/org.opencpn.OpenCPN/config/opencpn

YES!!!

That is what I did, and I got the update.
  • Click on the Raspberry icon at the top left of the screen
  • Select OpenPlotter: Settings from the drop down menu
  • click Refresh
  • click Install All Available Updates
