Can we have a look at your log? I'm interested in seeing which chart exactly makes OpenCPN crash - the last time I did have a look at the OpenSeaMap KAPs, all I tried worked well.
Also, which version of OpenCPN?

I have the Version 3.0.2 Build 2012-07-07, which I just reinstalled after updating my Ubuntu from 12.04 to 12.10.

We just need to have a look at the end of the logfile when the crash occurs. Is this the very end?

Much better. There's quite a delay between the last chart was loaded and the crash - was there something specific you were doing and can you reproduce the crash under exactly the same conditions?
Will download the charts and stress OpenCPN a bit with them, but you could save me some time...

Pavel,
I forgot to answer one of your questions. Typically the sw crashes when I try to move in the KAP-map or switch several times between the maps.

Can you please try the latest beta release, and see if the same thing happens? The next stable version will soon be released, and it's important to fix all possible bugs.

I have no luck trying to reproduce your crash with the current code - could you please try to install the latest beta as Thomas suggests? Don't worry that it's still called beta, it's actually much more stable and mature than 3.0.2 and it will be proclaimed 3.2 stable very very soon, so we would really appreciate the input.

Got it updated now as you adviced. It's working like a dream. Thanks. And the out-look is also much better.

Many thanks for the report. Good that we don't have a show-stopper bug appearing this close to the release... The terminal output is harmless, it just doesn't seem there's a way to get rid of it.

I have been browsing through all the posts. I notice very few posts about the Mac version.

Is this indicative of few people using this version or is it indicative that there are less problems with this version?

This is an important question for me because I will have the following options:
  • Install on old laptop running XP
  • Install on a Macmini with OS
  • Install on a Macmini in a Windows partition

I still have one problem: I don't get the signal from gps to OpenCPN.

I installed the gpsd from Ubuntu (version 3.6) from terminal with "apt-get build -dep gpsd". I think I had all the necessary compilers and libraries needed for the installation (at least there were no error messages. But: 1) I didn't have the qt4 development tools, which is not available for Ubuntu. 2) I don't know if the tinfo package was set in a proper way.
After installation completed I set the the xgsp path to /dev/ttyUSB0. The xgps seems to be working. The connection in OpenCPN was set also to /dev/ttyUSB0.
If I try to run gpsd from terminal, I get an error message "gpsd:ERROR: can't run with neither control socket nor devices".
If I try to set the gpsd path I get an error message "gpsd -F /dev/ttyUSB0
gpsd:ERROR: can't listen on local socket /dev/ttyUSB0
gpsd:ERROR: control socket create failed, netlib error -1.

So the problem seems to be the control socket. Do you have any idea on how to fix it or where to ask?
