Because it is not what they are supposed to do. Feel free to create a feature request for other instruments with the functionality of the "free phone apps" to be implemented and maybe at some moment someone will decide it is worth his time to do it, or implement them yourself.

Um, this is the feature request page is it not?
If I could write the code myself I wouldn't be here requesting this feature.

Audible direction finder/guidance for AIS&MOB. Flyspray.

Here is the flyspray feature request.

https://opencpn.org/flyspray/index.p...s&task_id=2545

Please vote for it.

As I am new to Flyspray please adjust as to proper "severity" if necessary.

Thanks

Re: Feature Requests

Not urgent at all, but it would eventually be nice to have the tidal stream object in ENCs (TS_FEB) have the category attribute spell out the current cycle and not just the category number. in other objects like LNDMRK, for example, we write out the attribute

CATLMK monument (9)

Analogy for currents... CAT_TS Flood (1)

in the meantime, we can generally guess it correctly with the jingle that the Flood has the Feathers.

Just fine tuning a fine product.

Re: Feature Requests

David, your FR is nicely illustrated and clear. Why not enter it into Tracker's Feature Requests with the screenshot, so we don't loose it. And while at it, vote for it yourself?
I will vote too.
Thanks.

Re: Feature Requests

If this is not the right place to mention this, then i apologize. It is just a thought going forward.

It is a request for a new parameter to be added to GRIB plugin. Simulated radar reflectivity (REFC). This parameter can be used to forecast squalls, and has been tested quite a bit now as being productive. There is a section on how to interpret the data in the book Modern Marine Weather, 3rd ed.n.

The parameter is available in global coverage in the FV3-GFS model, as well as the high resolution WRF models for the Mediterranean from OpenSkiron.org. Saildocs now offers FV3-GFS and I anticipate they will add this parameter in the near future.

The long name = "MaximumComposite radar reflectivity @ Entire atmosphere (considered as a single layer)"

Units = "dbZ"

Grib1_Parameter_Name = "REFC"

Other programs that can view this valuable data include the free XyGrib, and the commercial products LuckGrib, and Expedition.

It would be a nice addition to OpenCPN as it is a new and exciting tool for marine forecasting.

Re: Feature Requests

David, I'm always interested in new weather tools, as are many others. How does REFC compare to CAPE? Will they both be useful? I am in favor of this, perhaps it should be entered into the Tracker, under Grib_pi? So it is not lost and so we can all vote for it?

It does not need to be entered anywhere as it is already implemented in https://github.com/OpenCPN/OpenCPN/pull/1379

Re: Feature Requests

Thank you. That is fantastic. I am sorry i had not noticed this before. I will go look now. To answer Rick's question: the reflectivity is much more useful in predicting squalls than CAPE. I can explain more if there is a best place for that.

David, how do I request a FV3-GFS from saildocs? sample syntax?

Re: Feature Requests

Same as asking for GFS, just put FV3GFS. He does not have the simulated radar parameter yet.

blank mails to gribmodels@saildocs.com, gribinfo@saildocs.com, gribnews@saildocs.com brings related notes.

Also has NAM (12-km, not 3-km) but this does not seem to be announced anywhere.

Re: Feature Requests

Thanks!

Code:
FV3GFS: ======= NOAA is in the process of updating the core of the GFS model. The new version is running in parallel experminetally, and is available with the code "FV3GFS".

Parameters and details are the same as the operational GFS model although it is currently running about 3 minutes later and no "early" data is available.

Once the FV3 update becomes operational the GFS and FV3GFS codes will both access the new version.

This is expected around Mar 10, 2019 but may be further delayed.
Sounds like no further changes to the grib plugin needed besides being able to add REFC to an email request?
