Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Hubert,
82304...I'd chop the Legend and insets out in one blow, then change the status....Many charts of varying status will have plys added anyways,I bet....
Frankly,I loosely considered xtra plys needed to just mean "Thumbs",as they needed a home of their own but the meaning has expanded and rightly so.

81737...off grid?am I getting your meaning here? It's supposed to be.It has been corrected.(and looks about right to me upon a quick look)the o grid should be south and east of the printed one...

PS:I warned you the 8000's were, well...it's the tropical sun,the sharks, all that perhaps

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I'm confused. When we do one of the special plys (and upload the gpx file), are we supposed to change the chart status to doable?

Also, I assumed that the uploaded gpx file would replace the old one until, perhaps, the chart was locked. Not so?

Hi David,

no the status will be for the moment "PLY's added" (generated automatically).
You don't have to touch naything in thos case.

And yes, the uploaded gpx replaces the former one and as in the case of the general data to generate the kap file, every time you are changing the gpx a new mask for quilting will be generated. So if we have to correct something, there is no issue to do so.

Hubert

BTW: there are just 3 files left in the category - hurry on!

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

The category with additional PLY's is done for the moment.

I would like to remember that there are still a lot of charts that have texts/legends/comments on the "navigable area". This type of fine tuning can be done without changing the rest of the work flow applying the same procedure as for the charts with indents/extrusions.

If my calculator works correctly we have at this moment 2394 charts to play with.

Thanks everybody!

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Motivated by some comments with questions how to characterize a chart in a given moment and also taking into account the suggestions from Richard (#1003) and Thomas (#1023) I tried to summarize the steps and status a chart is taking in our workflow.
In my opinion these steps should be documented within the database (with dates and possibly comments).

A pdf is attached.

Call for comments

Hubert

BTW: would have liked to embed the document visibly but don't how to do so

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Good work,Hubert.I like the score mechanism...
..but who and how to do this?Maybe this should be in the header too?could be something like...
"WGS84 Q=2/5" or "2:5" in the chart name...?

...these have to be run through bsbfix after editing the header,by the way,but that's easy.Just drag em onto it!
well,should be...!

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Happy,

I would suggest that somebody with knowledge about the intrinsics of BSBs should comment about it.
Especially which side effects may been provoked by putting additional lines in the headers. Obviously it would be the easiest to have the comments and the status and release/version information there.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

By the way...a point of irritation:
does anyone know how to avoid THIS...

I right click to insert waypoints

The result is changed positions of these.Note the latitudes.I don't think this should happen.

It should be as:

Name:	movingwaypoints03.png
Views:	104
Size:	5.1 KB
ID:	33332

(in the end after having moved the waypoints,I like it to be as in:

Name:	movingwaypoints04.png
Views:	97
Size:	4.4 KB
ID:	33333

all nicely "doubled-up"
and went to some effort in process to copy/paste longitude latitudes from one to another in the dialogue windows as I went along to achieve it.

I know someone out there knows a better way!

PS: this is with "Waypoints locked unless dialogue open" engaged...

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Hubert et al,

I like the idea of a chart quality status, but feel that we need a status page for each chart. I have used Google earth to look at various charts that I will be using next winter. I'm using GE2KAP to compare the shoreline of the chart and GE. Any given chart might have coincidence in most important areas but show a sandbar has grown by 100m. Or it might show mangrove growth in shallow areas that don't matter. If you don't pick the right areas to take GPS way points you might be inclined to give the chart a 1 and send someone on a sandbar. I would much rather know about the sandbar than the three (perhaps arbritary) points of land that match the chart.

It seemsto me that each chart could have a page with fixed info (including status, suggested datum correction, Problem Areas, other non-NGA charts for the area for a start), and a varible section that collects other info related to the chart.

For my own use I have a spread sheet that notes: a probable bad datum (seen in GE), any new features (like a cruise ship dock), shoreline inconsistancies, etc. This is the sort of info we could keep in the varible area. I think we should keep this area related to navigation. If we feel the need, we could add a second section for good anchoring spots, marinas, snorkling etc.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Just athought but,revisiting Richardhc's post,
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...tml#post807451
it seems that tracks are a good verification tool....These tracks could be on that Page where the draft of the vessel is included with it.
Not all charts would need whole pages, but it'd be great to keep any good info proffered.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I have just downloaded the NGA chart of Arhur Harbour in the Antarctica.

After conversion to .kap file and installing in OCPN it does NOT show up.
Nor does it show the red chart outline.

The Arthur Harbour.kap file shows up in both SeaClear and Fugawi Marine ENC.

Can anybody help?

You can download the Arthur Harbour.kap file here:
4shared folder - ANTARCTICA
