Nuclear-powered superyacht aims to host cutting-edge research

Entrepreneur Aaron Olivera and superyacht specialist Ivan Salas Jefferson designed "Earth 300", a nuclear-powered [Molten Salt Reactors] exploration vessel, that will stretch 300 metres long, and features a 13-storey Science Sphere.
The design includes 22 laboratories ,fully equipped for approximately 160 scientists, that can collect and analyze data, as the ship travels around the world. In addition to accommodations for the scientists, there will be room for 20 ‘Experts-in-Residence,’ 20 students, 40 VIP guests, and 165 crew members.
Some of the main areas of research, that Earth 300 will focus on, include energy independence, education, water and food security, global health resilience, and climate change. The ship’s Science Sphere will house the labs, where this research will take place, and each one will be dedicated to a specific topic, such as Indigenous maritime economies, cultures and strategies, robotics, visual arts and architecture, and quantum sciences and technologies.

Re: Ocean Trivia

Thanks Gord,

but I feel this is a lot of hot air.
95% certainty that this will not turn into reality.
I worked for many years in super yacht exterior design and there where tons of crazy ideas out there with flashy websites. Very very few of these got actually built (and completed!!).

Even getting permission to run a nuclear system on a private ship will be very hard to get, followed by the challenge to convince ports to let you anywhere near them at all....
Costs will be humongous.

Re: Ocean Trivia

You're probably right, Franziska - this would have better been offered [if at all] in Nautical Oddities.

Re: Ocean Trivia

Antarctica is the only continent that was literally “discovered”, because it has no indigenous human population.

The crew of the British merchant ship, the “Williams” were the first to lay eyes, accidentally, on mainland Antarctica, which they described as “uncharted lands south of Cape Horn”. Irish mariner Edward Bransfield was sent to investigate, in 1819, and later became the first person to chart mainland Antarctica.

By the 1950s, seven nations -- Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom -- claimed territorial sovereignty over areas of Antarctica.

FWIW: “Arctic” comes from the Greek arktos, “bear”. The bears in question are not polar, but celestial, because the constellation Ursa Major, “the greater she-bear” (also known as the Big Dipper), is always visible in the northern polar sky.
“Antarctic,” then, means “opposite the bear.”
Coincidentally, the arctic has bears, and the antarctic doesn’t have bears.

Re: Ocean Trivia

In 1664, a ship sank in the Menai Strait just off the coast of Wales. But one of the 81 passengers survived: Hugh Williams.
More than a hundred years later, in 1785, another ship sank in the Menai Strait and, again, from the 60 passengers aboard, only one survived — Hugh Williams.
To add more mystery to the tale, the year 1820 marked the third instance of sinking in the Strait, with the only survivor being [you guessed it] ...
Hugh Williams.
