Re: Winlink could be in trouble?

From https://winlink.org/sites/default/fi...i_comments.pdf (which is a good read in its own right)

"12. There are several sources of commercial software that allow third-party interception
of communications of Pactor 3 and Pactor 4 communications:
PACTOR III HOKA
http://www.wavecom.ch/content/ext/De...worddocuments/
pactoriii.htm
https://saab.com/globalassets/comerc...io-monitoring/
demodulators-and-decoders--vd-technology.pdf
All SCS Pactor modems also have an internal command, MONitor, that allows the
modem to be used with appropriate software to demodulate and print received
characters in clear text ARC mode. See page 69 of the manual at https://
http://www.p4dragon.com/download/SCS...IIIusb_4.1.pdf
The use of these products for this purpose also requires knowledge of the protocol used
and encapsulated message and it’s treatment, and the development skill to apply them
successfully. "

Re: Winlink could be in trouble?

An important point is that while yes, removing the symbol rate limit would enable pactor 4 but it would also stimulate experimentation in other digital communication protocols. We now have winmoor because of the high price of SCS modems. Ham radio is about experimentation. There are a lot of hams interested in developing digital modes. They need the freedom to be able to experiment.

As an aside, maybe the band plan needs to be revised to reduce the impact of digital modes on other modes of operation.

We're going to re-rig our boat next month. I'm actually getting rid of the insulated backstay and going with a backstay mounted long-wire antenna, I believe it will do just as well as the insulated backstay. We regularly practice with stations as far away as Tijuana without issue today.

Anyway, I like your approach HelloSailor Thank you.
I am curious regarding your mention of a "backstay mounted long wire antenna". I have been looking at fitting insulators on our backstay, but if I can avoid it I will. Can you please advise further details (do you mean just a separate wire running from your mast head?).

Thanks,
David

At the risk of derailing this conversation ....

I’m not associated with this company in any way but I believe with our AT-140 tuner this will work just fine. GAM/McKim Split Lead Antenna | GAM Electronics

Thanks for the info. Also have the AT-140. I would be concerned re this antenna direct coupling into the backstay and effectively making it live.
Will look further into it, but will leave it at that - further discussion for another thread.
Thanks again,
David
