Paper white displays

Hi all,

One for the diy electronics crowd.

Has anyone dabbled with using paper white reflective displays for cockpit instrumentation? If so, how did they work out?

I’m finding references to them as good for direct daylight applications.

Matt

Have look here:

Even though it's in German. Google Translate can help you.

Thank you. A bit to read there. I'll see if they move on from M5stack.

I've got a handful of M5Stacks. They are fun but a bit limiting. For a start, the screen is a bit too small. Then their daylight readability is only fair. But finally, I found them hard to power from anything other than the USB port and got some weird reliability issues when trying other power supply approaches.

Fun bit of kit though.

Re: Paper white displays

I’ve used several paper white displays. They work well in sunlight. They are poor at dynamic fast moving images. ( gauge pointers etc ) it’s a lot cheaper then buying optically bonded high nit lcds.

I was thinking of them for SOG, depth, wind speed and direction.

Ideally wind direction would be done graphically, maybe a one second update or thereabouts. Do you think that would be too fast for the display?

Re: Paper white displays

They are limited not only by refresh rate but also by total number of refreshes. Friend’s diy depth (or wind, I forget) display died after one (short finnish) season.

So mind also that aspect. Varies by product.

Yes things like gauge pointers would not redraw fast enough imho

Yes, I am seeing some mixed results on YouTube. It does seem to be a weakness for them.

On the other hand, they are a cheap experiment and if they don't work for this job I have some other jobs that will be practically static, like the water tanks and battery gauge.
