New Std Horizon Matrix AIS GPS: Max AIS range only 10 miles????

Just installed a new matrix ais gps. 2200 i think, brand new 8 months ago. Max AIS range in the settings is 10 miles. My old one would go to 30 and most atleast 25 miles... what gives? What is max range on your unit? Anyone got a hack for this?

why are you looking at the vhf screen? it's useless anyways.

you need to run it to a plotter.

Once off of soundings on a multi day offshore trip we turn off our plotter and I use the VHF display for AIS. It’s perfect for open water.

I recommend you get the remote com for it, I have it by the wheel on my cockpit and it makes it sooooo much better, from monitoring the AIS targets, to disabling the proximity alarms when they trigger, to radio communication with bridges when singlehanded.

Its also really easy to buy a usb adaptor cable and wire its AIS and GPS data to OpenCPN.
